The Ancestry By DNA ™ genetic test predicts your Most Likely Estimate (MLE) percentages of Native American, Sub-Saharan African, East Asian, and European heritage based on a sampling of your autosomal DNA.
Autosomal DNA is passed from father and mother to child; each person receives exactly 50% of their autosomal DNA from their father and 50% from their mother. Thus, our ancestry DNA test offers a look at which markers traveled down through the generations to be found in your DNA today.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR ANCESTRY TEST RESULTS
The Basics
AncestryByDNA™ (and EuroDNA™) testing analyzes Ancestry Informative Markers (AIMs) to predict the Most Likely Estimate (MLE) percentage of your genetic ancestry. Ancestry By DNA examines up to 175 such markers; EuroDNA examines up to an additional 145 markers. Results come in three displays: the MLE Certificate, Bar Graph, and Triangle Plot.
IMPORTANT: Ancestry DNA test results represent a small range of percentages from each ancestral group. Though some of the charts and the certificate display an exact percentage, this is really the Most Likely Estimate (MLE) of your true percentage within the results range.
Each results tool is designed to give you a broader and broader view of the results range possibilites - from a very specific MLE percentage, to a broader range (10x less likely) of possible ancestral genetic makeup predicted by your DNA markers.

A typical MLE Certificate may show percentages in up to four areas. These percentages represent your Most Likely Estimate for each group but should not be considered exact percentages - they are the Most Likely Estimate (MLE) of your true percentages based on an analysis of 175 Ancestry Informative Markers. |
Bar Graph
| The ancestry testing Bar Graph reflects the same MLE percentages as your certificate (the blue bars), but also shows the immediate range of possibilites around your MLE percentage (the red lines). Though it is possible that your true genetic ancestry lies within the range indicated by the red lines, any other point in this range is 2x less likely than your MLE percentage. |

Triangle Plot
The ancestry DNA test Triangle Plot indicates the MLE percentage as a single point on the graph (the red dot). The dot's distance from the triangle end points indicates the ancestry percentage. The closer the dot is to an endpoint, the higher the MLE percentage. For example, if a red dot is only 10% away from the European endpoint, the MLE percentage for European is 90%. If the dot is exactly halfway between the Native American and East Asian endpoints, the MLE percentage shows 50% Native American and 50% East Asian.
Since there are four possible ancestry percentages, our "triangle" is really three-dimensional: imagine a pyramid with a triangle base. If you can image the red dot "floating" somewhere inside the pyramid, you've successfully imagined a triangle plot! In our case, the red dot "floats" about 67% of the way toward the European endpoint (from the opposite wall of the pyramid), about 19% of the way toward the Native American corner, 4% of the way toward the Sub-Saharan African point and 10% of the way toward the East Asian endpoint.
The next possible range (the 2x less likely range) is represented by the green line surrounding the red dot (again, imagine a small circle of three-dimensional space around our red dot). Additionally the plot shows the 5x less likely range (blue line) and 10x less likely range (yellow line).
