A Healthy Approach to Major Life Changes
Hi. I’m psychiatrist Dr. Janet Taylor. And today, I’m talking about making major life changes.
If you’re thinking of making a major change in your life, you’re not alone. A nationwide IDENTIGENE survey shows that nearly half of all adults across the U.S. are planning to make one or more life changes this year. In fact, among those planning a major life change, one in ten said they plan to address a paternity question or concern this year. Personal satisfaction is the most common reason people say they want to make a major life change. Financial and health reasons are also near the top of the list.
Making major changes can be stressful. In fact, 94% of people surveyed say they’re nervous about making their life change. And, when asked about confidence levels, 20% of respondents say they lack confidence they can actually accomplish their change.
Nervousness is normal. Sometimes it’s difficult to know where to start to make change happen. In my experience, it helps to put your goals in writing and outline the action steps required. In making a plan, you might want to speak with family or friends to provide support and encouragement. Also, the advice of a professional who has experience helping others in similar situations can be invaluable. Having a written plan and the support of others will likely make you feel more confidence about making your change happen.
