A paternity test is the single most accurate way to answer questions of paternity.
Numerous people ask if they can bypass paternity testing and determine who the biological father is simply by using a “conception calculator” instead of DNA testing. Conception calculators can estimate probable conception dates from the birth, LMP or due dates. However, if there were multiple sexual partners within a short amount of time, this method can leave doubt whereas DNA testing does not. Consider conception calculators as estimates. When trying to determine paternity between two or more alleged fathers when dates of sexual contact are close, a DNA paternity test is a must.
The optimal approach is to conduct a paternity test with all alleged fathers, the child, and the child’s mother. However, if one alleged father is not available the next best option is to do paternity testing with the other alleged fathers, the child, and the child’s mother. It’s also important to notify the testing laboratory if any of the alleged fathers are related in anyway (For more information as to why this is important, please click here.)
