Maternity Testing vs. Paternity Testing

Answer: Yes!

Paternity Testing or Maternity Testing?

Paternity testing involves a DNA test with a potential biological father and the child in question, but every now and then it’s not the father being questioned: it’s the mother. Maternity testing usually occurs in adoption or immigration cases; however, when the question of whether someone is the biological mother of a child does arise, a maternity test may help get the answer.

Maternity Testing to Help Answer Questions of Maternity

Maternity testing is completed in the same way as paternity tests. The probable mother swabs her cheek for DNA samples and sends them in to our laboratory for maternity testing along with cheek swab samples from the child. The single difference is the report will indicate it’s a maternity test instead of a paternity test.

Man Requests a Paternity Test: Claims his own Father is Bio Dad

In a news story published by Herald Sun, one man tried filing suit, claiming he’s not responsible for paying child support because he learned there is a possibility his father could be the true biological father of the child in question. He subsequently requested paternity testing to determine the truth.

The man’s request for paternity testing was denied by a Federal Magistrate.

A court dismissed the application submitted by the man who claimed he was not liable for paying child support of the now-teenage child . A paternity test may resolve this issue; however, the court denied his request because the man was aware of the affair between his father and the mother of the child as early as 2003 and neglected to follow through with action then.

The Magistrate believes the man is simply trying to get out of paying child support, even though the man’s lawyer claimed it was because the child had the right to know who the true biological father is.
