Unusual Questions about Paternity Testing

DNA is a difficult topic to understand for many. As one of the top DNA testing labs in the world, here are a few of the more unusual questions we’ve fielded along with their answers.

Question: “If I send you my DNA and a copy of my birth certificate can you tell me if that is really where I was born?”Answer: Unfortunately, your DNA does not contain any information about your birthplace.

Question: “Can you tell if someone does drugs by testing their DNA?”Answer:No, we cannot. This is a more common question than you might expect. We cannot detect alcohol use or abuse in your DNA either.

Question: “I was sick with the flu when I swabbed. Will this change my results?”Answer: No, your DNA is not affected by virus or bacteria. It is also not impacted by cancer, HIV, or other diseases.

Question: “How old do you have to be to test your DNA?”Answer: You can test an unborn child’s DNA by sampling the amniotic fluid of the mother. Meaning, there is no age limit. You can test a child right after he/she is born. Your DNA is the same from the time of conception until you die.

Question: “Is it possible that my DNA is the Da Vinci Code?”

A Paternity Test Changes Lives: One Grandmother’s Story

The results from a paternity test are often life-changing.

A few customers have stayed in touch with us over the years, and I know that the results of their paternity tests have definitely made an impact on their paths in life. There once was a woman who needed a paternity test for her deceased son to see if he was the father of a child conceived shortly before his death.

She was very distraught and would call and email several times a day. She emailed us pictures of herself, her son, and the new child. So many things would change in her life if this was in fact her grandchild. She didn’t feel the mother of the child was fit to care for the child and though she was nervous at the thought of caring for a newborn at age 62, she was willing to do it.

Finally, when her test results were ready, she cried. She wasn’t ready to hear them. Either way she knew her life was changed forever. As it turns out, it was indeed her son’s child. For weeks she would email us about the court battles over custody and support.

Soon the emails started only coming in every few months. She had won full custody of the child, and the results of the testing we did made her life dramatically different.
