You are not alone

The situation is more common than you might think. A recent survey found that one in five Americans (or 20 percent) said that they, or a close friend or family member, have questioned paternity.* It doesn’t just happen to wild, promiscuous women. Paternity questions can affect everyone.

The truth can set you free

The first step to resolving the issue is being honest – both with yourself and with the man involved. The earlier you can put the opinions or accusations of friends and family, and your own guilt, to rest, the more confident you will be moving forward with your life. Admitting that you have paternity questions is hard, but taking the steps to find out the truth can be empowering.

Remember to focus on the child

Having both biological parents involved in a child’s life is so important to the child’s health and well-being. According to researchers, children who live without their biological fathers are, on average, two to three times more likely to be poor, use drugs and experience educational, health, emotional and behavioral problems. Knowing one’s father is also important for medical reasons. Many times children are predisposed to certain medical conditions that can be traced back from their mother and father. Knowing your parents’ health history is essential to identifying some common diseases or disorders.

Dr. Janet Taylor Helps IDENTIGENE Educate Public on Healthy Approaches to Paternity Testing

IDENTIGENE has signed psychiatrist and television personality Dr. Janet Taylor as a spokesperson for the first half of 2013. Dr. Taylor is helping to educate the public regarding healthy approaches to paternity testing, ensuring that those with paternity questions feel respected and informed. As part of the partnership, IDENTIGENE and Dr. Janet Taylor are producing educational videos, conducting interviews with media and creating informative online content.

IDENTIGENE first connected with Dr. Taylor during their mutual involvement with ‘The Jeremy Kyle Show,” a national syndicated television talk show. Dr. Taylor provided advice to guests on the show, while IDENTIGENE’s laboratory arranged for DNA sample collections and processing for guests, as needed. Over the past two years, IDENTIGENE followed Dr. Taylor’s work nationally and within the New York community, and determined that she would be a great asset to their customers, as well as the general public who have paternity questions.

IDENTIGENE Partners with Fatherhood Matters to Promote Active Fatherhood

IDENTIGENE has partnered with Fatherhood Matters Inc., a San Antonio, Texas based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting active fatherhood. The partnership consists of content sharing through IDENTIGENE and Fatherhood Matters social media channels such as company webpages, Facebook, Twitter and blog sites. In addition to content sharing, IDENTIGENE is supporting Fatherhood Matters with a donation and discount coupons.

‘We are honored to work with Martin Henderson and Fatherhood Matters,’ said Steve Smith, Executive Director of IDENTIGENE. ‘Confirmation of paternity can be a motivator, and removing doubts about paternity can empower a father to become involved in parenting,’ added Smith. Martin Henderson, President of Fatherhood Matters, says it is important to remove any roadblock that deters men from being active in the lives of their children. ‘I’ve seen many examples where proving paternity has made all the difference. If a man knows a child is his, he’s more likely to provide financial and emotional support and to become invested in that child’s future,’ says Henderson.

‘Fatherhood Matters is in the community everyday speaking to families about the importance of fatherhood. If our partnership with Fatherhood Matters helps bring just one family together, it will have been worthwhile,’ comments Smith.

The partnership with Fatherhood Matters is not the first non-profit that IDENTIGENE has supported over the last year. In July of 2012, IDENTIGENE partnered with St. Louis-based Family Resource Center with its ‘Kids Deserve to be Liked’ Facebook campaign, helping to fund programs to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect.
