A DNA paternity test is specifically designed to answer the question of whether or not a man is the biological father of a child. In fact, this is the only way to answer the question with complete peace of mind. There are conception calculators and blood-typing tests that may or may not help exclude one or more men, but these cannot determine paternity with any certainty. DNA can be found in every cell inside the human body.

DNA used for paternity testing determines if there is a biological relationship between an alleged father and child. Children  receive half their DNA from their mother and half from their biological father. DNA allows scientists to read the profiles inside the cells to determine if the child and the alleged father are biologically related.

At-home collection uses supplies from a paternity kit. Participants themselves collect materials and then send the samples to the laboratory for testing. The ease of an at-home paternity test

Buccal swabs (also known as cheek swabs) provide a non-invasive approach for collecting samples with an at-home paternity test kit. The swabs included in the IDENTIGENE at-home paternity test collection kit are made of a unique material intended to collect the cells effectively and they are also designed for easy DNA extraction in the lab. Paternity Testing can be Emotionally Overpowering

Paternity testing is available to help prove, or disprove, paternity between an alleged father and a child. Sometimes the answers are not clear as to who the biological father of a child may be, and a paternity test will help answer that question.

When claims of paternity are made, the best option is to complete a paternity test, using DNA, to confirm if the alleged father is in fact the biological father of the child in question. Sometimes court admissible paternity testing may be necessary. In any case, the emotional affect can leave participants that are involved in the paternity test feeling many different ways, depending on the outcome they want…and what the outcome actually divulges.

A paternity claim and paternity testing

Actor Keanu Reeves was recently accused by one Canadian woman of fathering at least one of her four children. He participated in paternity testing, and according to contactmusic.com, Reeves stated it was ‘horrible’ going through accusations of fathering the children of a fan.

In 2009, Karen Salas accused Reeves of being a father to at least one of her four children. She claimed Reeves used ‘hypnosis and disguised himself as her ex-husband to impregnate her.’ Salas took Reeves to court asking for  $150,000 a month in child support that she wanted retroactive from 1988, and $3 million a month in spousal support retroactive from 2006.

Keanu Reeves continues to claim he had never met Salas before the accusations. Going on the advice from his attorney, Reeve’s completed paternity testing which verified he did not father any of the Canadian women’s children, who are now adults.

If you question the paternity of a child, then you know the emotional toll it can take on an individual or an entire family. With paternity testing those doubts can be answered: Are you the father?

Prenatal paternity testing

Paternity testing can be done during pregnancy as early as 10-12 weeks. Conducting a CVS or amniocentesis to collect the child’s sample is at the discretion of the mother’s physician. They will determine if mother and child are healthy enough to undergo such procedures. Because of the risks involved, many physicians will not conduct these procedures for paternity testing alone.

Paternity testing

If prenatal paternity testing is not an option, then the child’s sample can be collected after birth. There is no waiting period. Once the collections are complete, samples are sent to the IDENTIGENE laboratory. Results are available  two (2) business days after all samples arrive at the laboratory. With online results, participants of the paternity test can receive their accurate results much faster.

At-home paternity test

The at-home paternity test offers the convenience of purchasing the DNA collection kit at your local retail outlet, and collecting DNA samples in the convenience of your own home. Once you complete the collection you simply mail the samples in via the Business Reply mailer provided in the kit. Keep in mind the at-home paternity test is not court admissible. This is because the collection is done by the participants where identification cannot be verified. When you test at home, you are doing so for your own peace of mind and not for any legal purpose.

Legal paternity test
