Question:
What if I mess up my DNA Paternity Test? I ate/drank/brushed my teeth before using the DNA Paternity Test and I don’t want my results to be wrong!
Answer: IDENTIGENE DNA Paternity Tests are very easy to use. Simply rub the swab on the inside of the cheek for several seconds, put the swab in the labeled envelope and mail it off to IDENTIGENE.
DNA is extracted from your cheek cells, which are collected when you rub the swab against the inside of your cheek. Eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth will not change your DNA, but it can make for a messy sample. While eating and swabbing won’t change your DNA or cause a wrong result, it might mean that you didn’t get enough cheek cells for good DNA extraction; in other words there may not be enough DNA, but it won’t be different DNA.
Once we receive your samples they will be checked to be sure you have collected enough cheek cells for DNA extraction. If the lab feels that there is not enough DNA present to get a good reading, we will send a recollection kit, at no charge.
Paternity Test: Tips for Collecting Clean Samples
- Wait an hour after eating or drinking before using the DNA Paternity test. This ensures you are collecting the cells from inside your mouth and not bits of turkey sandwich.
- Drinking or brushing your teeth can wash away the loose cells which are what you want to collect with the swab.
- Using the swab, rub the inside of the cheek firmly for 10-20 seconds, rotating the swab as you go. It is the loose cells inside your cheek you want to collect, not saliva or blood.

Kate, I accidently put the samples from Identagene back in the plastic it came in thinking this would preserve the samples later reading over the directions realized I had done the wrong thing, and should have directly put it in the envelope. Please help me, will this damage the samples? Thank you
KD says
Toni, This should be fine but I will notify client support. If they can’t find your case under the email provided in this comment chain, I will let you know. Thank you!

Toni,
There is a chance that the swabs could mold. If this is the case, we would contact you for a recollect. Please let me know if you have a case # or email address linked to your test so that we can note your case. Thanks!

What if the alleged Father being tested did’nt swab for 10 or 20 seconds like the test says? Or really get his jaw real good when he swabbed?
Identigene says
Hi, Mo. If there are any problems with the quality of the samples, the lab will temporarily suspend testing and request new ones. So if your report is issued, that means the samples were good to test. No worries!
Anonymous says
Hello Kate,
Had a paternity test done with someone who I was hoping was not the father and it came back negative. However now I am worried because I’m seeing reviews where they were tested again and the results were positive. Should I retest?
Identigene says
Hi, Anonymous. If results were different after a second test, it’s usually because people submitted someone else’s DNA instead of their own for the first test. What I always recommend is, for an at-home test, all participants should be in the same room and witness each other doing the DNA swabs and sealing the swabs in sample envelopes. They should then all go to the post office together and drop the envelope in the mail. That way, all participants can be sure no fraud took place. If that’s not possible (participants live in different places, for example), then it’s worth it to pay a little extra to have a witnessed, legal test performed. The lab cannot verify everyone’s identities for a home test; we rely on the participants to do their due-diligence and make sure everyone is who they say they are. Results are absolutely accurate for the samples we are provided. Hope this helps!

Hi kate i have two possible fathere well partner a i had sex wit 23 24 and 25 unprotected and partner b the 25 up until i ovulatated which was the 2nd and now i found out i concieved on the 2nd of the next followin month which is most likely the father
Kate says
Quita, based on the dates you gave, my guess would be that it was the second partner. But that is only just a guess.
If you want to be sure, do a DNA paternity test with the most likely father. I think it will be worth it to clear up any uncertainty. It can be done quickly, and confidentially from your own home.

Hey kate i have a few questions…. I did a home DNA test to prove to this guy that my daughter was his, she looks just like him, same eyes nose and mouth. We took the test and the test came back that she wasnt his and i want another test done, but im wondering what happened, why did the test come back that she isnt his? I didnt sleep with nobody but him. Im going to get another home DNA test again, but what to know why it came out like it did the first time. What went wrong??
Kate says
Hi Jay,
If you used IDENTIGENE’s home paternity test, I’d love to discuss your results with you. There are a lot of variables and I want to make sure I get all the details so we can figure out what happened with your test. It’s important that you are confident in your results. Kate says
Hi Asha,
I’m so sorry that this is so stressful for you right now, and I understand why you would be concerned. However, looks REALLY aren’t a good way to determine paternity. I’m sure you’ve had cases where you’ve met someone or seen someone who looked JUST like a celebrity. It’s the same thing here, you just can’t go by physical features.
Are sure that the correct people’s DNA was submitted and that there was no way that samples could have been switched before arriving at the lab? You didn’t say who did the testing, but did you use an AABB accredited laboratory? If both of those are true, with the same result on two tests, I think your result is probably accurate.
The only other thing I would recommend that you could do, is do a legal test. The test is the same, but with the legal test, the identity of all the participants is confirmed, and the samples handled by an independent third party to be sure they are not falsified or tampered with in any way. A Legal Paternity test is more expensive than a home test, however.
L. Keane says
Kate,
My youngest daughter is now 8 years old. To this day, I believe she was switched with another baby at birth while I was in the hospital. I definitely know the father is the same father, but I just need to know if the 8 year old is truly mine. Can I have my oldest daughter (age 16) do the swab test? Would testing a sibling increase the test results? This 8 year old does not look anything like me, dad, sister, or anyone in the family. Thanks for your opinion!
Kate says
@L. Keane: Thank you for your question. The best way to answer this question is a maternity test (between you and your 8-year-old daughter). You can use the paternity test kit from the pharmacy, like CVS, Rite Aid, or Walgreens, to test maternity as well as for a paternity test – it’s just mother-and-child test instead of a father-and-child test. Just call into the customer service team (888 404 4363) and let them know you want a maternity (mother) test instead of a paternity (father) test. Testing the sibling (brother or sister) is a more complicated, more expensive, and less conclusive way to get at the question (see Sibling DNA Tests).
And one more tip: whether or not a child “looks” like a father or mother is not an effective way of determining paternity. Genetics express themselves in many different ways and combinations. A child may not look like their biological mother OR father, and still be their biological child. Looks can be (and often are) very deceiving (see phenotype vs. genotype in the Genetipedia).

Kate,
I have recently sent off a paternity test to identigene, I am curious why you do not use a more sanitary/sterile container for the swabs rather an envelope also the envelope had gotten damp from some salivia while obtaining the cheek cells will that offect my results??
Amber says
Hi Julia,
The question about a more sterile container for the swabs is a very good question! Because the process that we use for DNA testing does not detect bacteria (when you are worried about bacteria growth you would want to use sterile swabs), the process we use is great. We do not want to place the swabs in plastic either. Paper is best. The sample envelopes may get wet from the saliva as you swab the inside of your mouth and cheeks, and that is OK. It will not offect the DNA results.
Kay says
Hello Kate,
Im trying to determine who my father is. my mother passed away 2 years ago to this date, and i have 2 guys who are potentials. one guy lives in another state, and refuses to do a test with me. he said i look nothing like him (and i dont. nor do i have anything in common with him. nothing).
the other guy lives in my city, but wont do a test with me because his mom thinks all i want is their money (i don’t) so now hes backed off. i look exactly like him, and have 90% of everything i’ve loved my whole life, in common with him and his family. his siblings are all 100% sure that i’m related to them. so the siblings paid for a test to be done with them instead of the father. the tests came back 25%. we’re all confused about the results. shouldn’t it be near 0% or near 100%?
Amber says
Hi kay,
With aunt/uncle DNA testing, you dont receive as conclusive of an answer as the Paternity tests. However, if you tested with one of the alleged fathers siblings and received 25% probability, I would recommend involving another one of his siblings if at all possible. I gather from your message that he has more than one sibling that would be willing to test with you, is that correct? I would really be interested in discussing this more if you are interested in proceeding.

My granddaughter had a DNA test done and it turned out that the man whom we thought was her father turned out not to be. I gave the baby some milk before she the DNA test was taken and she was drinking on the milk before she was called to take it. Could her still having milk in her mouth have thrown the test off.
Amber says
Hi Shay,
Thank you for your question. We ask that participants in the DNA Paternity test don’t eat or drink anything about an hour prior to taking the samples. This is not because it will change the DNA, but because we want to keep the samples free from anything that can destroy or contaminate the DNA which makes it difficult to produce a profile.

Hi Carl,
Thank you for your comment. Personal DNA paternity test may help answer your questions and give you the peace of mind you are looking for. The subject may not be an easy topic of conversation to bring up with your son, however, I have found that honesty is always the best policy.
gwen says
my son father requested a dna test 9
we visited a lab and im coincerned that the test were tampered with can we still do a blood test
Amber says
Hello Gwen,
If you are not happy with your results, I would recommend having another test done by a different laboratory. DNA from cheek swabs or DNA from blood samples will deliver the same results. Your DNA is the same no matter where it is taken from.

hi kate
I tested my son and recieve result that it wasnt his son .I would like to know is i touch my the tips of my son swabs would that have caused some thing to do with the results .i know you cant go by looks but my son looks just like him his head is shape just like his and everything .he does not look anything like me execept for our nose he looks nothing like the possible father at all .should i take another test
Amber says
Hello Angie,
Thank you for your question. If you had touched the tip of the swab and left DNA as well as swabbed the child’s mouth the profile would have come out mixed. Meaning there are two profiles present. We would then recollect samples at that point because we could not determine which profile was actually tested. Because a single profile was detected this was not the case. If you are unsure about the test results I do recommend taking another test, however, I would recommend making it a legal paternity test. The samples are collected by a third party. This may ensure accurate collections.
Concerned mother says
Hi Kate. I was with my ex Then I had a period.. Two weeks later I was with another guy unprotected. Two weeks after that I found out I was pregnant. My son is two months old now and my boyfriends mother did a DNA test on our son and it came back my boyfriend was not his father. My doctor told me there was no way I was pregnant before my period and my boyfriend was the only guy I was with after my period.. Is there any way I could have been pregnant before my period because my son was born two weeks early… Could my baby eating and my boyfriend washing his and my sons mouth out with water affect the results of the test and make a false negative come back? I don’t know what to do…
Amber says
Hello Concerned Mother,
If you know for sure the samples that were tested were that of your ex-boyfriend and your son, the test results are accurate. Eating prior to taking the samples is something we try to avoid, and if the food did contaminate the samples in anyway then the laboratory would not have been able to retrieve a profile at all. The fact that we did indicates the samples were good. Also, for exclusions we test the samples twice to verify accuracy. I would recommend testing the other alleged father for verification if you are still unsure.
Lane says
I have a ten year old son. His father wants a paternity test done, and is an alcoholic with abusive tendencies. I know he is the father but I do not want him to see my son. And my son doesn’t want to see him either. Could I swab my half brother instead of my son so the result show he isn’t the father? Would they be able to tell he is my brother not my son?
I’m scared for my son’s safety and want to protect him.
Amber says
Hi Lane,
Its never a good idea to fraud a paternity test. If you test your brother instead of your son the test would show that you are not the biological mother of the child being tested. If you must participate in a paternity test, honesty is always the best policy. Then if you and your son don’t want the father in your lives you can fight him in court.
kim says
Hi Kate my question is….could my DNA have affected the results if i kissed my baby before the test was taken?
Amber says
Hi Kim,
Not likely. Because the child’s sample is collected from inside the cheek this is most likely not possible to hurt if you kissed the child. If for some reason your DNA did get on sample somehow that would be caught in the testing process. The sample would show double profile, meaning two different DNA profiles would have shown up. I hope this answers your question.
kim says
Hi Kate another question i have is can a home DNA kit be wrong i have a couple friends that has taken a home DNA kit as many as 4 times before they got the correct results and also how often can a test lab mess up well in other words how often has it occurred?
Amber says
Hello there, Kim,
The DNA that the laboratory extracts for testing is correct. When the samples are received the laboratory follows strict guidelines to ensure the the accuracy of the test. This means, we can only test the DNA we receive. That is where legal and personal testing comes in. Personal testing is not admissible in court because we can not verify whose sample we actually have. Legal tests have the collections witnessed to verify the authenticity of the samples. Participants have their ID verified and the collector takes photos in most cases. So the test can only be wrong if the samples sent to the laboratory were not those of the actual participants.
sangie says

Yes, we also test the sex chromosome to verify the sex of the child.

Pinky says
Hi,
I have recently had a Dna test done with someone who claimed to have thought I was his daughter for the past 30 years. He scheduled the appt. through some dna service. The test was done at a hopital lab. We were not given any special instructions about what to do or not to do before the taking the test. HE is a smoker as well as myself. I had a flavored water and a yogurt drink just a few minutes before the test was done as well as smoked a few cigarettes. I also chew gum up till about 2-5 minutes before taking the test. I’m sure that he had to of drank something as well as smoked a cigarette right before taking the test. The test came back as a negative, Is there any way possible that the test was affected in any way by the above information?
Amber says
Hi Pinky,
The reason we don’t want you to put anything in your mouth for an hour before collecting the samples is because we dont want to have food or anything else mixed in with the DNA that could contaminate it. However, because the laboratory doing the testing was able to extract profiles for the both of you, I would say the samples were fine. When a sample is contaminated that means the lab can not extract a DNA profile from the samples and would need to recollect. Because this did not happen I would say the results are correct. If you are still not sure I would recommend that you contact the laboratory that performed the testing and speak with them about your concerns.
Teryne says
Hi Kate,
I’m 23 years old and have been searching for my father for approximately 12 years now. A few years back I found one of the 2 possibles and he brought me down and took a dna test spent alot of time together and have alot of things in common. I look like him somewhat but his two daughter and I are exact replicas except they are light skin and I am a little darker than them. Like Beyonce to Jennifer Hudson.. Anyway we took the test in the same house but at different times and I never saw him take the test. In fact I have no idea if HE really took it or not. But anyway needless to say the test came back negative and I just really don’t understand. I’m a biology major so I get the gene expression getup but it just doesn’t make sense. I mean I even look like his parents. Anyway, my mom says she only slept with these two men and neither of them tested positive. I believe my mom so is it possible that the 1st test could have been altered with? Or could the lab have just been wrong? Or what do you think could have went wrong? The test results that I did read were sent via email and I didn’t understand them at all. Please help.
Amber says
Hi Teryne,
I am so sorry to hear about your situation. The reason the personal at home paternity tests are not used in court is because the laboratory doing the testing can not verify who’s sample they actually have. It is possible for anyone testing to have someone else swab in their place. I am not sure if that is what happened in your case, however, if you are positive that one of the two men are your biological father and you do not believe the test results I recommend that you ask them both to participate in a legal paternity test. That way all participants are collected by a third party where identification is verified and photos of the participants are taken in most cases. That way you know for sure whose sample was actually used for testing.
The test results can be a bit difficult to understand sometimes, if you do want help with reading them I would recommend contacting the lab that completed the testing and having them review them with you, or feel free to contact our client support team and they can assist as well.

my girlfriend just had a baby on the 4th of april… the day after the baby was born i took the samples from me the baby and mom. she swears im the father but i had doubts. the results came back that im not the father. everyone says he looks just like me, wich makes me question the dna test. so we had another sent out and are waiting for the results from that one. was it too early to take the samples from the baby?? he was a month early, i dont know if that made a difference. and she was also breast feeding him… i just want the truth but she swears im the father but the paternity test says other wise
Amber says
Hi Jason,
There is no waiting period for collecting DNA samples from the child. If a profile could not be extracted from the DNA sample the lab would have asked for a recollection, and because this did not happen I would estimate the samples were good, and the results are accurate. If you do receive a different result from the 2nd lab I recommend contacting the laboratory that completed the first test and ask them to review the results of both tests and ask them to explain why the results are different.
jason says
so breast feeding would not alter the results either??? both paternity tests have gone through identigene.

hi there!! my brother-in-law recently took a dna test for a baby that might be his. the test came back 99.994% he’s the dad. the ex-girlfriend does not want him to be the dad so says her boyfriend also tested and came back 99.998% positive. is this at all possible?? what should my brother-in-law do now? he wants to know for sure if the baby is his or not.
Amber says
Hi Debi,
No, this could not be possible. Only the biological father would test 99% or higher. I would recommend a legal paternity test. That way all parties are collected by a third party with a chain of custody for verification, and have results from the laboratory sent to all parties involved. I would test both alleged fathers with the child this way.
Dell says
My ex bf did a in home test, he says they are going to email him with results for DNA what will the results look like if they are positive and what will they look like negative? I want to make sure I know.
Amber says
Hi Dell,
When results are released, depending on the laboratory doing the testing, they will say something like “Alleged Father is not excluded as the biological father of child” with a probability of paternity of 99% or higher indicating that he is considered to be the biological father. OR the results will say “Alleged Father is excluded as the biological father of Child” with a 0% probability indicating he is not the biological father. I hope this helps.
Nisha says
hi there, i want to know when you take a swab test can the test come back ad say 0.0% not the father.. i thought it would say like 99.9 not the father but im askin to see if that is possible or not
Amber says
Hi Nisha,
If the test reveals the alleged father is not the biological father it will give a 0% probability. That means there is no probability he is the biological father. I am not aware of any laboratory that would state 99.0% not the father.
I hope this helps.
Nisha says
im here again mii child is now 6 mnths and im 18 yeard old and my mother and his mother took a swab test and sent it off and it came bk sayin 0.0% not the father..the test came from cvs because we dont have that much money to get a big one…i dont know what to do at the moment.. what should i do because i know he’s the father of my baby
Amber says
Hi Nisha,
The personal test is not admissible in court and this is because the laboratory can not verify for sure who sent in samples. Meaning we can’t verify the alleged father actually sent in his own samples or someone else’s. I would recommend a legal paternity test. That way all of the parties go into a collection facility for collection by a third party who establishes a chain-of-custody and the collector sends the samples to the lab so the can not be tampered with. They verify identification and take photos of the participants in most cases. This will verify that the correct DNA samples are submitted to the lab.

Hello, I recently did a dna test through identigene a piece of mind one. It came back my boyfriend not the father. Identigene had messed up my email addy along with my name. As well he is the only one that could be the father no one else was involved. Why did my test come back as him not being the father? They had 8 genes common and supposly 7 that was not. Some was mutated cells as well. Thanks
Amber says
Hi Amanda,
In order for your boyfriend to be the biological father of the child he must match the child at every location (with maybe an exception of 1 mutation). The 8 matches indicates those specific markers are common among the population. You can take two unrelated individuals and test them and they may come back with some matches, it does indicate they are related, it only indicates they have common markers that are in the population.
If you have questions about your testing I would invite you to contact our client support team to speak with them about your questions. They are knowledgeable and can assist you. They are available Mon-Fri 9am-8pm EST. I hope this helps.
rose says
Hi there.I did a home DNA test and me and the child had 10 of the 15 that match, but they excluded me of being the dad.I don’t understand.
Amber says
Hi Rose,
With paternity testing in order for there to be a biological match the alleged parent and child must match at every location (with an exception of maybe 1 mutation). In order to biologically parent a child you must give one of your markers at every location! There may be matches, that would indicate those markers are fairly common among the population. I hope this helps, if not please feel free to contact us for follow up questions at (888) 404-4363 Mon-Fri 9am-8pm EST. Or simply write me again.

My ‘supposed’ son looks absolutely nothing like me.
The test came back that I was the father. But I just don’t believe it.
How accurate are these results?
It says he is mine by 99.99% I just don’t believe hes mine!!

The test results are VERY accurate. Keep in mind that genetics have nothing to do with DNA. Children can receive genetics from either side of the family from generations back.
Nancy says
Hi i did a paternity test with labcorp, only 12 markers matched out of 20 and i was excluded as the biological father yet my daughter resemblems me and even my family plz advise me.
Amber says
Hi Nancy,
In order for a potential father to be considered the biological father of a child, the markers must match at each location. There may be some matches, this does not indicate a biological relationship, it simply means those specific markers are common among the population. You and I could test and may have some markers in common, but we are not related and it would mean the markers are common. If you are still unsure about the results I would recommend doing another test to help put your mind at ease, but a legally collected DNA test may be better. The legal tests are collected by a third party and submitted to the lab by the collector to ensure a chain of custody.
Joleah says
if you swabbed the child’s cheeks with the q tips of the supposedly father’s q tip, could that possibly alter the results any?
KD says
Hi. If I am understanding your question correctly, the answer would be yes. The Identigene kit comes with three sets (packages) of three swabs. Each set is intended for one person. For example, you would swab the child with three swabs and then place in a collection envelope with the child’s information. Then you would swab the alleged father’s cheek with the second set of three swabs. Those would then go in a separate envelope with the alleged father’s information. The third set of swabs is for the mother. Again, those three swabs would be used for the mother and then put in her envelope. Please let us know if this doesn’t answer your question.
Amber says
Hi Joleah,
I am not sure if I completely understand your question, however, if you swab the children with buccal swabs that were used by the alleged father and sent them in for testing, the lab could identify that. Most likely you would end up with mixed profiles (meaning two profiles) and because we cant identify which profile belongs to the child we would request a recollected sample. Also, if the alleged father’s profile and the child’s profile are identical (same person swabbed for both) we would recollect as well because it is not possible for the the alleged father and child to have identical DNA profiles.
If there is any question of trust I always recommend a legal paternity test. That way all participants are collected at a collection facility by a third party. The collector sends the samples to the lab for testing to establish a chain of custody to verify the samples could not be tampered with. Also, the collector will verify ID and take photos of the participants in most cases. That way we can verify whose samples we actually received for testing.
I hope this helps, if you do have more questions please let us know.
Larry Adams says
Before, I purchase a test through you, I have taken another test through family tree dna. Their test came back as not a match. Would a severe mouth infection cause the test to be incorrect? This will be our third and final test. Infection gone now. Thus far, 1 test positive and 1 test negative.
Amber says
Hi Larry,
To answer your question a mouth infection should not change results in any way! If you had two tests completed with different results I would suggest you review the profiles to verify the profiles for each participant are the same. The only way to get different results would most likely be caused by testing different people. In a situation like this your best option would be to do a legally collected DNA paternity test. This way all participants doing the test are collected by a third party where ID can be verified and photos are taken in most cases. The collector submits the samples to the laboratory to establish a chain of custody to verify whose samples the lab is actually receiving for testing. The laboratory you select to do the testing can help you arrange this.

can airport x-ray bag mess up the dna swab

Hello Carlos,
No, airport x-ray can not destroy or change your DNA in any way. You can rest easy knowing that if you pack your swabs (either in checked baggage or carry on) your DNA collections are safe.

hi i done a dna paternity test for my ex-partner and my 3 week old child and it came back not the father and it says 5 of 15 do not match does this mean that he could be the father of my child as i had worked out the dates and he was the only person i had slept with at the dates that are shown could any one please advise me on what to do i have rang doctors to see if they do dna and they are charging me £400 to get the dna test kit and then £30 for them to do it
Amber says
Hello Samantha,
In order for the alleged father to be the biological father of the child in question all markers have to match. A child will receive half of their DNA from the mother and half from the father. This means that if the alleged father did not give the child a number at each location then he can not be the biological father. There may be some matches, this does not indicate a biological relationship in any way, it simply means those specific markers are common among the population. You and I could test and have markers in common, it does not mean we are related, it means we both received common markers from our parents. I hope this answers your questions, if you do need anything else please let us know.

I recently just took a dna test on a kid that was suppose to be mine and the results came back that i was not the father. the kid looks identical to me. all of my family and friends say the same thing. me and his mother slept together in the middle or end of april. what month would have made me the father? he was born february 19. im really considering taking another dna test just to make sure. your help would be greatly appreciated!
KD says
Hi Joshua,
I suggest you visit http://www.babymed.com/conception-calculator. You didn’t tell me the year of birth so I cannot accurately plug in the dates. At this time, I would consider this your next step before retaking a paternity test.
P.S. I work for Identigene.
Monath says
Hello there! I am so confused! The dna test excluded me as the biological father of child. Mother wants to all go the lab and do another test, because the previous one was by mail. I need to know before I travel 6 hours away, how certain is the dna test?. I have a court day very soon and all documents have to be done. Do you thing based on your experiences that is necessary to do a second test to verify paternity? I heard some people saying that test can be negative at first and positive the second time, is that can be true? That does not guarantee me nothing, that means that I have to do a third test to actually make a comparation with the other two if the result of the second one came out positive. Please help me to clear this out! Thank you very much.
KD says
Hello Monath,
We can only speak for the Identigene DNA Paternity Test. If this was an Identigene test, we stand by the results 100%. There is no need in doing a second test. However, if you need this test for legal purposes, sample collection and handling must be performed by a disinterested third party. The instructions included in our kit and on our website explain legal paternity testing. There is an additional processing fee for this type of testing. If you have further questions, please contact our customer support at 888-404-GENE.

Hi,my boyfriends ex girl recently told him that het 8 month old daughter is his.but he was never there for the birth he doesn’t even knows the babies last name.the mother refused to provide her dna for the identigene paternity test.but my question is can accurate results be determined if my boyfriends dna as well as the childs dna was taken?
KD says
Hello Ashley,
The Identigene test is accurate with or without the biological mother being swabbed. Cheek swabs from both the alleged father and the child is sufficient for a DNA paternity test. It sounds like your boyfriend should take the extra step and set up a “Legal Collection”. This costs a little more but he will have peace of mind that each step of the testing process is witnessed by a disinterested third party. Please call Identigene customer service at 888-404-GENE to set up this type of collection. You can also visit our website, http://www.dnatesting.com for more information on legal testing vs. peace of mind testing.
Cat says
My dad and I just did a DNA home kit. We didn’t see where it said to put dry swabs in the envelope until it was too late. At first the wet ends were put together in the mail off envelope. Will this cause a false positive?
KD says
Hi Cat,
You should be fine. Most of the time, the swabs are damp from saliva. Identigene would contact you if they weren’t able to pull the DNA off of the swab. This is why we ask for three swabs so that if we can’t get it off of one, we have two more to try. If you would feel better, please contact our customer support line at 888-404-GENE and explain your concerns. I’m sure they can put your mind at ease. Thanks for contacting us.

I will forward your question to client support. They will be in the office tomorrow (Monday). I will answer your question once I speak with them.
caroline torres says
i did thee identigene kit & im shocked that the test came out negative because u never had sex with anyone else and i just know hes the father. can it be a false positive? If the swabs werent rubbed for the right amount of seonds or somethinh? Is a blood test more acurate? :/
KD says
Hi Caroline,
I’m sorry you are having doubts about your DNA paternity test. Blood tests and cheek swabs provide the same accuracy. There are a few questions I know customer service would ask. 1) Did you swab yourself and send in your set of swabs? 2) Did you witness the alleged father swab himself? 3) Did you swab the child or at least witness the swabbing?
The time spent swabbing the cheek is not a concern since you received a results statement. This one detail shows sufficient DNA was obtained on the swab and that is how we provided you with an answer.
My best advice is to have you contact an Identigene customer service representative about your results statement. Their phone number is 888-404-GENE or you can conduct an online chat during business hours. Please visit our website, http://www.dnatesting.com for a link.
Kim says
My test with my alleged father came back negative but I thought if it wasn’t him it was one of his brothers……if I share 0 DNA with him is it possible to share DNA with another in his immediate family family?
KD says
Kim,
I hope I am understanding your question. Please let me recap. You are looking for your biological father and you tested one father with yourself and it came back negative or excluded as the biological father. Now you are asking if you should test one of his siblings as the possible biological father but your results statement should 0 DNA in common.
Our answer is that the IDENTIGENE test only tests paternity. As long as the brothers aren’t identical twins, there is a chance that one could be your biological father. You would need to test each one that you think could be your father.
You can always contact IDENTIGENE at 888-404-GENE.

I purchase this test about 5 mouths ago and i together the information and test i needed to get for my suppose to be child. I thought that I have lost my test, but i just found it. I didnt do my portion of the test until today, will the results still be accurate.
Please email mail me with the answer.
Thank you
KD says
Hello James,
I would call our customer service department at 888-404-GENE (4363). We typically recommend reswabbing after 6 months or if you think the swabs have been contaminated outside of the collection envelope. Our customer service department will be able to give you direction once you explain your situation clearly over the telephone. Thanks!
Urijah says
I recently took a test and witnessed the swabs being placed in the envelope and mailed in. It says I am the father, is that 100% accurate with no chance of mistake?
Urijah says
I’m gonna try and ask this question again, I have posted it twice and for some reason it keeps disappearing. I have recently took the paternity test, I witnessed the swabbing and package being put into the mail. The test came back I am the Father. Is that 100% accurate with no chance of mistake?
KD says
Hello Urijah,
Yes. You can be assured that the test results are 100% accurate. If you would like to discuss your results statement, please contact our customer service department at 888-404-4363. Thanks for using IDENTIGENE.
rudzani says
i tested my child wiyh the alleed father and the test came back negative but in most of those lines the child had one line in those lines could it be different if i had also done the test.and the child was also bein breast fed and the i only swabd for two minutes
KD says
Dear Rudzani,
The test results will not change from excluded to not excluded when a mother adds herself to the test. If our laboratory gave you an excluded result, they were able to collect DNA off of your child’s swabs despite any breastmilk or timing issues. If you would like to talk with one of our client support staff, please call them at 888-404-4363. We want to make sure you are comfortable reading your results statement and that you do not have any remaining questions. Thank you for using Identigene.
keisha says
I’m 5 months prego my boyfriend wants a DNA dun I do t think hes the father is there anyway I can make the test say it’s his baby
KD says
Keisha,
We want to encourage you to be honest with DNA testing. If you withhold information from the father or falsify any DNA test, it is considered fraud.
Nancy says
Hello there
I wanted to see if you could be of any help in helping me read a paternity test that was done with out me being there by my ex and my daughter and in the results it shows he cannot be the biological father
If you can please help me out I would really appreciate it Thank you do much
KD says
Hello Nancy. If it was an Identigene test, I would recommend you contact client support at 888-404-4363. They can look up your case # and go over the results statement. If the test was not witnessed by anyone other than your ex, there is room for dishonesty. In some situations, participants have swabbed someone other than themselves and claimed the DNA as their own. We look forward to hearing from you. Best. Identigene.
marty says
hi. could you please tell me if a 15 year old can get his own dna test?
KD says
Hi Marty,
Thank you for contacting Identigene. A 15 year old can participate in a DNA paternity test as the alleged father but cannot sign for the child. The biological mother (if over 18) or the legal guardian has to give consent for the child. If the 15 year old wants to participate in the DNA paternity test as the “child”, then their parent or legal guardian must sign for them because they are a minor.
Hope this answers your question.
jes says
Question, can a dna test be wrong if u kissed the baby’s mama, but waited an ahour to do the test
KD says
Jes,
No. The collection process requires the participant to swab the inside of the cheek for 30 seconds in order to grab cheek cells. The swab is grabbing more than saliva. If there were two people’s DNA on the swab, our lab would consider this a “double profile” and contact the customer with questions. Also, we have two other swabs to test if the first one is questionable. Hope this helps. If you have further questions, please contact our client support staff at 888-404-4363. Thank you.
Jamie says
If I used both of my swabs on the same side of my cheek would this make a difference? I know I was suppose to use one swab for each side of my cheek so worried it could come back with wrong results?
Jamie says
I swabbed the same cheek with both swabs, will this make any difference to the results? i know i was suppose to swab both cheeks, many thanks.
KD says
Jamie,
You are fine swabbing the same cheek with multiple swabs. Did you swab for 20-30 seconds each time? If IDENTIGENE has any problem grabbing DNA from any of your swabs, they will contact you. I have confidence if you swabbed for the 20-30 seconds each time, you will be fine.
Best!
Identigene Social Media
Jamie says
Hi that’s great news thank you. Yes I swabbed for the required time maybe slightly longer just to make sure, completion date is the 6th being Tuesday so I’m also guessing there was enough cells to extract DNA from or I would have had a phone call by now? Also how long will it be from the completion date to receiving the results? Kind regards,
Jamie
KD says
Hi Jamie,
Sorry again for the delay. I am glad you received your results!
Jamie says
Jamie again, got my results yesterday.. I am the father to my daughter :)
KD says
Hi Jamie,
Sorry for the delay. Our blog was “under construction” and I did not have access to your question until today. I am so happy for you and your daughter! Enjoy a wonderful life together; full of memories! Best, IDENTIGENE
Alicia Lyons says
Can I swab my child’s mouth twice … Like on 2 different swabs and send it in for his and the alleged father. Would the test come back positive?
KD says
Alicia,
No. We would be able to determine that the DNA is a duplicate of one of the participants. Hope this answers your question. Thanks! IDENTIGENE
Sarah Karr says
Does it matter if the swabs were accidentally mixed up in the envelopes between the child and the alleged father?
KD says
Sarah,
If you know that the swabs and envelopes are not matching, I can tell client support and then they can suggest an action plan. Do you have a case # that you could share or the alleged father’s first and last name so that we can look up the case? We have contacted client support for an answer to your question, however, if your test is recent, we would like to alert our laboratory.
Thank you.

Does it matter if the names on the envelopes were accidentally mixed up between the child and the alleged father?

I spoke with client support and if you are certain that there could be a mixup, they need to be contacted. The number is 1-888-404-4363. Thank you.
Dazed&confused says
I have recently found out that the man that raised me may not be my father. It is possible he or his father (my grandpa) is my father . If I was to do the test with him would it show If he was my father or half-brother?
KD says
Dazed & Confused,
We can determine paternity even if the two alleged fathers are closely related, however, we need to know this upfront and the mother needs to include herself in the testing. If both alleged fathers can participate, that would be the best way to conclude an answer. Our client support number is 888-404-4363. Please contact them and they will advise you how to proceed. Thank you.
Taylar Davis says
I want to know if I breastfed my 3 month old before the test. Would I.have to retake it or sane results just a little longer to come
I
KD says
Dear Taylar,
No, we would test the swabs you mailed to us. If for some reason we were unable to pull DNA from the swabs, we would contact you for a retest and provide you with new swabs. It is unlikely that breastmilk would block our swabs from grabbing cheek cell DNA. Thank you.
lenay bryan says
We all just brushed our teeth is that going to mess it up. Or should we wait an hour?
KD says
Dear Lenay,
Brushing your teeth shouldn’t effect the cheek swab from grabbing your DNA and it will not change your DNA. However, the toothpaste residue could end up on the swab, possibly contaminating the swab, so this is why we advise avoiding eating or drinking right before swabbing. Since we ask for 3 samples from each participant, it is unlikely we wouldn’t get enough DNA on one swab to run your test. Thank you.
Jena says
My boyfriend has been fighting in court for a day test of a song that is supposedly his. The first time the girl brought the wrong child. And just recently he got a deal letter saying the child is his. But he wasn’t there to witness the child getting a dna. This woman also has a child that his his son. She has family through out the court system. Everyone in the dna office says the case don’t sound right. But Noone is helping him solve how to really now if the right kid got dna tested. So my question is how can he find out whether the right child got dna testes
breanna says
Hi Jena,
It’s difficult to know whether the child in question was swabbed or if it was possibly his other known child who was swabbed. If there is any doubt about who the samples came from, we recommend a legal test. Legal testing will give you peace of mind that we have received the correct samples and that your results will accurately reflect the paternity of the child.
To arrange a legal DNA test you will need to contact our client support staff at 1-888-404-4363. They will arrange an appointment with a collector in your area, a non-interested third-party, who will verify identity of each participant with photo ID or birth certificate, witness the swabbing, and mail all the samples directly to our lab.
The legal test will provide you with a legal document that will hold up in court, and it will eliminate any doubt about what samples were sent in for testing. I hope this information is helpful. Feel free to give us a call at 888-404-4363 with any further questions you may have.

Hey the alleged father of my son ordered a dna test so we can do it at home. I know I only was with him during the month of Dec when I got pregnant. The results came back not his,.I think its wrong. I was with someone else in Jan but this was 1 week after my period, calculating back the other person couldn’t be my son father. Even before the test results came in,there was a mix up,and they couldn’t figure out the envelopes so we waited extra days for the results, could this been accurate???
breanna says
Hi Eli,
We recommend using a legal test which will ensure each participant is honest in their collection and that the samples haven’t been tampered with. A legal test is tested in exactly the same way as our home test, the difference between the two is the method of collection. The home test is collected at home and the legal test is witnessed and collected by a designated collector. The collector will verify the identity of each participant with photo ID, witness the collection of each sample and then mail the samples directly to our lab. This eliminates the chance of participant fraud and gives everyone peace of mind that the test is accurate because samples were collected from the correct participants.
If you have questions regarding your specific case, you will need to contact our friendly client support staff at 1-888-404-4363. They would be happy to help answer any of the questions you may have. Thank you!

My husband just recently did a dna test in august for a child who came back not his. He recently took another test in November and the results were positive. The first test he did he brought it from walgreens and this test was purchased online from the mother of the child. Ho could this be???? can the results have been tampered with??
breanna says
Hi Tonya,
Yes, unfortunately, there is a likely chance that the results or the test has been tampered with if you got two different test results.
In situations like this, we recommend either having a group collection where all participants are present to witness opening the test, sample collection, and mailing of the samples. Each participant should be given access to results by filling out the order form properly. This way each person involved can contact IDENTIGENE directly and hear or receive results directly from us.
Another option you have, which comes with an additional cost, is a legal paternity test where a collector, opens the test, witnesses sample collection and mails the samples to our laboratory. This test can also be used in a court of law for child custody or child support cases. This method can give you peace of mind that no one has tampered with the test.
If you have any questions regarding our legal test, please contact our friendly client support staff at 1-888-404-4363. Best of luck to you!

So I had purchased a kit and messed up by licking the alledged father envelope. I bought another kit then noticed they have numbers on the envelope so I just took new swabs out of the new kit and flipped them down away from the part I licked and taped over the top. Could the positive result possibly have been my dna? I ask because if its his my child was a monyh late with no signs of being past the due date
breanna says
Hi Anne,
IDENTIGENE does not test DNA from the envelope itself, but the cheek swabs. Therefore, your results should not be contaminated with your DNA and the alleged father. If for some reason, two DNA profiles showed up on one sample, our lab can detect if there are two DNA profiles on one sample and would call the participants for a recollection of the sample. Another measure that our laboratory takes to make sure something like this doesn’t happen, is that we test for the gender of each participant. If your DNA was on the alleged father’s swabs, the DNA would show a female DNA profile for the Alleged Father’s samples. At that time, your case would be flagged and you would be contacted for recollection. IDENTIGENE works hard to make sure that every aspect of your DNA testing experience is free of accidentals by taking precautions such as these. If you have any further questions, please feel free to call and speak with one of our friendly customer service members at 1-888-404-4363. Thank you!

I recently did a DNA test came back negative not what I expected. I think my baby’s dad changed his or my baby swab. I call and says I’m not listed as mother which I listed myself as mother. Makes no sense. I did not test myself.
breanna says
If you are concerned that the alleged father may have tampered with the swabs in some way, we recommend that you have a legal test which will ensure that the samples we receive come from the intended participants. In a legal test, the samples are collected by a third-party who verifies identity and ships the samples directly to our lab.
Another thing to be aware of is that if you are a legal guardian, you can get results. You will need to verify this by sending us a copy of the child’s birth certificate, a copy of your photo ID and fill out a form.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us at 1-888-404-4363. Thank you!

Would it make any difference if after 1 month i got prego from my babys dad but for the rest of the 8 months i slept with someone else would that affect the dna test to come bak that my babys dad is not the father and could it be the other person ? Thank you !
breanna says
Hi Marissa,
No, this will not change the DNA of the child. The best way to determine paternity is a paternity test because timing and physical characteristics is not a reliable method of determining who the father is. If you would like more information about our paternity tests you can visit our website at http://www.DNAtesting.com or call us at 1-888-404-4363. Thank you!
Andrea says
I recently had a dna test done and am confused about the results. My son had both formula and breast milk within minutes of the test. Could this effect the results?
breanna says
Hi Andrea,
If you are confused about what your results mean you should contact the lab that did testing for you. If you tested with IDENTIGENE, we have a friendly client support team who can answer all of your questions and help you fully understand what your results mean. You can contact us at 1-888-404-4363.
As for your question regarding contamination from formula or breast milk, this cannot effect the results. Contamination is rare, but can happen. If our lab finds that there is contamination due to food or drink, we will contact the participants to recollect the samples. The contamination does not and cannot change the DNA, it simply inhibits our ability to collect enough DNA to complete testing.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions or concerns and we would be happy to help! Thanks for choosing IDENTIGENE!

Hi I was wondering if 99.9 percent is enough to prove that my boyfriend is the father of our baby girl? He thinks that she looks NOTHING like him because that’s what his family says 24-7. I got pregnant when we were broken up and we broke up because we were both seeing some1 else. I ended up stopping and just seeing my ex. And got Pg. He did paternity test all 3 got mouth swabbed. 4 days later got results, he’s the dad. Baby is 3 months now, she happens to be tan (like my ex guy( and all he keeps saying that he feels he cant b the father? How can this be? If when we were having intercourse I was not doing anything with that other guy. He then told me he didn’t want anything to do with me. I ended up excepting and tried 2 move on, during process I had sex with (the other guy) can that 1 time when I did I was a month pregnant determine that my Bf is not the paternal dad? After he even took a dnA?
Identigene says
Hi Kay,
Although many people may be tempted to rely on physical characteristics to determine paternity, it is not an accurate or reliable way to tell for sure. As for your 99.9% probability of paternity result, this is the highest probability possible. It is impossible to receive a result stating 100% probability. In order for a test to be 100% probability of paternity, every male on earth would need to be tested to be ruled out as the father. Your results are as accurate as current DNA testing allows. We would be happy to explain more about your results or our laboratory process to you or your boyfriend if you have more questions. Please contact us at 1-888-404-4363. Thank you for choosing Identigene!

Hi, i never took a DNA test and im 9 months pregnant now and im awaiting to have the baby so i can insure the father and grandmother the baby is indeed related to them but they are saying if it don’t say 99% he is the father and says 96 % that means i sleep around is that true because i haven’t slept around with no one else
Identigene says
Hi,
The probability of paternity doesn’t imply anything about promiscuity. It simply states the probability of paternity, or in simple terms how likely the tested man is the father. Thus a probability of paternity of 99% means that there is a 99% chance that the man tested is the father of the child tested and the same goes with 96%.
The difference between the two percentages is that 99% probability of paternity is a conclusive answer, whereas, 96% is NOT conclusive. CONCLUSIVE means that there is a concrete yes or no answer for paternity. When test results indicate 99% or higher it is a positive conclusive result, meaning we consider him to be the father. You can also receive a negative conclusive result, which is 0% probability of paternity which means that we do NOT consider him to be the father.
Anything above 0% and below 99% is considered to be INCONCLUSIVE, meaning no concrete answer can be reached. This commonly happens if the biological mother does not participate in the test, this is why we strongly recommend that the mother participate in testing. Including the mother provides more DNA information to rule for or against paternity, this is because half of the child inherits the mother’s DNA. If we can isolate or locate what part of the DNA came from the mother, it is easier for us to determine if the father matches the other half of the DNA. Please feel free to contact us if you have other questions or concerns that we can help you with, we are here to help. We can be reached by phone at 1-888-404-GENE Monday- Friday 9 a.m.- 8 p.m. ET.

I had a DNA test done for my daughter in 2012. I have recently tested the other alleged father because her “biological father” does not believe she is his daughter. The DNA results showed that the other alleged father was the father as well..I am not sure if there was a mix up on the DNA testing in your lab because I had did this the same exact day I gave birth back in 2012 with her “biological father.” I am really confused at the moment and don’t know what to do. I don’t know if you can mistake my DNA for the father’s DNA or if you would be able to tell if the DNA comes from a male or female. If you can please help me out here. Thanks
Identigene says
Hi Daniella,
Both alleged fathers should not have had positive conclusive results of being the child’s father. Our laboratory follows strict guidelines set forth by our accreditors, and we have many self-made policies and procedures so there is no possibility of mix ups in the laboratory. One such procedure that we have implemented is to check samples for gender, so in answer to your question, we would not mistake your profile with that of a male (or the alleged fathers’ samples). One way that we could help sort out these questions is to take a look at both test results.
If you could contact us via phone at 1-888-404-GENE (Monday-Friday) ET we would be happy to look into both cases and compare DNA of both alleged fathers and the child. Thank you!

Hi I’m a little slow with way results worded and numbers. I had 3 sons tested all came back 99.99% I’m not excluded. Oldest CPI 1,000,000,000 to 1. Middle son 35,000,000 to 1
Youngest 25,000,000 to 1. Understand vary cause DNA
Is the 25,000,000 to 1 a high and good number??. Also middle son had a .69 on index while other son 70.72 and another son 1.31. Is the .69 to worry?? And is that considers a 0? I noticed in understanding results that lower means common. But on diagram father was excluded had two nonmatches but on one had no match but had a .79 index. How?? Ifno match in that specific loci? SShouldn’t it be 0.00?? Thanks

Can a DNA test detect drugs or alcohol
Identigene says
Hi Sabrina,
Thank you for your question. There is a possibility that the samples could be contaminated with food, drink, blood or even from smoking, but we will be able to detect any contamination once the testing begins. The DNA itself cannot be changed by contamination, use of drugs or use of alcohol. If the samples are not contaminated, the lab will be able to process the testing and produce an accurate result to the question in paternity, this is not however a drug test.
In the event that the samples are contaminated, we do offer a free recollection kit which we will send out to you in the mail. I hope this information is helpful. If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact our friendly client support at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

My alleged daughter dad did dna test but it came back he wasn’t the father but he’s d only one I’ve been with could they have did it wrong
Identigene says
Hi Reka,
IDENTIGENE provides the most accurate testing available on the market today. We are 100% accurate based on the samples we receive and we have worked extremely hard to put measures in place that prevent any mistakes from being made throughout the entire DNA testing process from beginning to end. This is why the accreditation we hold as a laboratory are so important.
Our goal is to provide quality service and accurate results to all of our customers. The strict standards and procedures we follow extend to every single part of the process from the moment the samples arrive at our laboratory to the release of the analysis report when the testing is completed.
An extremely important part of the process is how the samples are handled and managed as they travel step by step through each stage of the testing. There is a possibility that the samples could be contaminated with food, drink, blood or even from smoking, but we will be able to detect any contamination once the testing begins. We can even detect if there are two different DNA samples on the same sample swab because it will show two different DNA profiles. The DNA itself cannot be changed however, so if the samples are not contaminated, the lab will be able to process the testing and produce an accurate result.
In the event that the samples are contaminated, we do offer a free recollection kit which we will send out to you in the mail. I hope this helps with your concern, we do hope if you have any more concerns to please call our friendly client support team. You can reach us at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. Hi Parth,
Thank you for your patience! I am understanding that you are in search of a test to find out how many sexual partners your wife has had? If this is the case, we unfortunately only have relationship testing kits. This being said, we are also unable to determine who was the first sexual partner or contact. I am sorry for the inconvenience this may cause. If you have any other questions regarding the types of testing available, please call our friendly client support. I bought dna test kit to find out who the father of my daughter is. I swabbed her and myself each using all 3 swabs provided for each person. He the alledged father swabbed himself and sealed the envelope. We then packaged it up and sent it in. I just found two more of the mouth swabs left in the packageing from the test which the alledged father did not use. Will there be enough dna from one swab to get results or will i have to do all of this again and pay the lab processing fee a second time?
Identigene says
Hi Nikki,
Thank you for your question! Typically, we recommend to have all three swabs used by each participant to be able to have additional swabs to extract more DNA is needed. If our lab cannot extract enough DNA to test for the alleged father, we would contact you and ask for a recollection. A recollection is free of charge and it is only to be able to obtain more DNA. This does not mean you would have to pay a second lab fee, only one fee will be charged. I hope this information helps. If you have any more questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our friendly client support at, 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

Before my daughters biological father left the country, I collected a Cotten swab with his saliva so I could get a DNA test done. It’s been over 8 months since i got it and I still have the que tip in a plastic zip lock bag. would his saliva still be good so I can still get the DNA test?
Identigene says
Hi BM,
Thank you for your patience! Sample swabs have a shelf-life of 6 months. Placing the swabs in a plastic container may cause contamination. Since your swabs have been on hold for longer than 6 months we would recommend recollecting at this point. I hope this information is helpful. If you have anymore questions please contact our friendly client support at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

Just got results back from sibling test. The probability was. 98.2
And the combined full vs. half sib ship index was 56 to 1
I read the interpretation results but could you please help me understand exactly what the 56 to 1 means
Thanks
Identigene says
Hi Penny,
Thank you for your patience! I understand you are referring to the Combined Index? If so, this is just a unique probability that was determined by the DNA. It is interpreting the probability of 98.2% into a 56 to 1 ratio. Both numbers are stating the same thing. I hope this information helps! Dear DNA Consultant:
I need a DNA consultant to provide me an answer whether a DNA test can be done to get a valid and reliable result.
I would like to inquire if your lab can do a DNA test to prove maternity test..
I want to clear my life-long question as to who is really my true biological mother. Was it the”mother” who raised me, or her sister (my so-called.aunt). There is a doubt my biological father and my aunt are my biological parents.
My biological father and the mother who raised me, have 6 other children. My aunt had a husband with 3 children. My father, the”mother” who raised me, and my aunt are all deceased.
I would like to inquire if a test is feasible. If not, please let me know why. If it can be done, please give me more info and the cost, to do it. You may call me at 909-272-7159. I am in California.
Thank you very much.

Hi Virginia,
Yes! We do test for maternity at IDENTIGENE as well as paternity. A Maternity DNA Test can be used privately, for personal peace of mind, or can be made court-admissible when using a third party collector. IDENTIGENE helps make all the arrangements when you call. If you would like to set up a maternity test, please call our friendly client support at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. We are more than happy to help you get started! Thank you for your question!

Can a paternity test that includes the mother of the child also answer whether the mother is the biological mother?
Identigene says
Hi Partnerjb,
Thank you for your patience! To obtain an answer to maternity question, you would need to purchase a maternity test as well as a paternity test. Having purchased both tests, our lab will then give two reports: one for a maternity test and the other pertaining to paternity. The maternity test is available to you for the price of $129, the same price as the paternity test. If you would like to order a maternity test in conjunction with the paternity test, please call our friendly client support at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. We are more than happy to assist you with any other questions you may have! Thank you for your comment!

If I do the test but I don’t have the money right away how long are the samples good for
Identigene says
Hi Angie,
Thank you for your patience! Swabs have a shelf life of 6 months after the DNA has been collected. With a time frame longer than 6 months, we recommend a recollection to ensure a strong sample for testing. I hope this information is helpful. Ok does a blood test different from this test i had my daughter swab test and it was 00.00% does it mean she aint my daughter i have a feeling on my heart she is what do i do a blood test or just believe this one that came out to be 00.00%
Identigene says
Hi Mario,
Thank you for your patience! Blood tests are not any more accurate than a swab test. DNA is the same whether it is collected from a buccal swab or a blood sample. Were you able to witness the collection of your alleged daughter’s sample? Have in mind there are instances when mistakes could be made in the collection process whether it be intentional or unintentional. If you have doubts on the honesty during collection, a witnessed DNA test is your answer. With a court-admissible DNA test, your samples are collected and sent to our facility by a disinterested third party, leaving no room for mistakes or sample tampering. I hope this information is helpful. If you have any more questions please call our friendly client support at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

Me and the father of my child took a paternity test. The results came back 99.9% paternity, but it also said there were 2 markers that were inconsistent. What does that mean? The courts won’t go forward with my.child support case because they said the results have a gray area.
Identigene says
Hi Tia,
Thank you for your patience! Typically, when markers read as inconsistent, it means the markers did not match. For IDENTIGENE to exclude a potential relative, we would need to have 3 inconsistent markers. The bottom of your report should explain the next step to strengthen the results. You did state that the mother was included in testing with the child and alleged father. Are there any other possible alleged fathers? Please feel free to call our client support at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET to discuss your case in detail. Thank you for your comment!

hi I got a home paternity test, when my boyfriend was swabbing my son he dropped one of the swabs. we sent the test in. I was wondering if this will change the results? should I get a different test. can you help me?
Identigene says
Hi Jenny,
Thank you for your question! It is difficult to tell if the swab will be contaminated before our lab processes it for testing. Our lab does test for contamination, in the case that a second profile is detected on your swabs, we will notify you of a need for recollection to obtain a clean sample. If you do not receive a message from us or receive your results, the samples were clean and did not pick up any contaminants. I hope this information is helpful. If you have anymore questions feel free to call our friendly client support at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

Have you guys still been able to do a successful paternity test even with a collection that was contaminated with reg drinks & alcohol as long as u got enough cheek cells? In other words would a little contamination of either or both the two automatically end in inconclusive results?
Identigene says
Hi Tammy,
When a sample is contaminated our lab will not test it. We would request a recollection in order to obtain a clean sample. Recollections are free of charge. If you receive an inconclusive result, it is typically from not having a strong enough DNA sample or the biological mother was not included in testing. I hope this helps answer your question. If you have more questions, please call our friendly client support at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

I suspect one of our collections is contaminated. Should I wait until it gets to u guys & u all determine its been contaminated first, or is it ok to request a recollection kit now? I would just need one set of the 3 swabs.
Identigene says
Hi Tammy,
It would be best to wait until our lab receives the samples and tests to see if the samples are contaminated. If we find an issue with your samples, we will contact you and at that point request a recollection and send you the supplies necessary. I hope this information helps! Mariona says
Can u collect San sample off an envelope or stamp
Identigene says
Hi Mariona,
Thank you for your patience! I understand you are asking if it is possible to collect a DNA sample from a licked envelope or stamp? If this is the case, it would be very difficult to get a clean sample to test. If we do not receive a clean sample, we would need to recollect because we cannot test with a sample that is contaminated with other chemicals or substances that are on envelopes. There is also a high chance the DNA would not be preserved on the envelope, making it hard to extract the DNA. Have in mind if a licked envelope or stamp is sent it, it would count as a special specimen since it would not be on a swab we provided in the kit. The special specimens have a testing fee of $400 and we cannot guarantee we can extract enough DNA. Every sample that is sent in requires consent from the person it came from to be tested. I hope this information is helpful. If you have any more questions, feel free to call our friendly client support at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

I did a paternity test with my alleged son. Samples were the: child’s buccal swab and my blood. The result shows that I am not the biological father of the child. But the child’s mother is insisting that I’m the father. Her reason is that she breast feeded the child and gave the child water before the test; and the Doctor warned us not to feed the child before the test. Please, could the feeding led to me been excluded as the biological father?
Identigene says
Hi Tobechi,
Thank you for your patience! We do recommend none of the participants drink or eat an hour before collection of DNA. When our lab receives samples, they are tested for contamination. This means we make sure this isn’t another DNA profile on the samples, if another DNA profile is found, we would contact the person and ask for a recollection since testing would not be possible without a clean sample. If you obtained a conclusive result, yes (not excluded) or no (excluded), then there was nothing wrong with the samples that were sent in. I hope this information is helpful. If you have any more questions or would like to speak to one of our representatives in more detail about your case, please call us at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. Thank you for your comment!
Tia says
I’m confused. If there are 2 inconsistent makers from what you are saying, then how can the results be 99.9% paternity. I know he is the father. There isn’t a possibility of another man. I was celibate for 4 months prior to our relationship and nor did I sleep with anyone during our relationship. There is only a question of paternity because his mother told him he should get one because my child doesn’t look like him. (Sorry for the details it’s just frustrating). I’m just trying to understand how can any markers be inconsistent when he is the father n it also says he is 99.9% the father.

Identigene says
Hi Francis,
We do recommend not consuming anything for 1 hour prior to DNA collection in order to reduce the chance of the swab becoming contaminated. Our lab does test for contamination upon receiving your samples. If our lab finds contamination, we will contact you and request a recollection in order to obtain a clean sample. Recollections are free or charge and we will send you the additional swabs. If a recollection is not necessary, or we do not contact you, your samples were not contaminated and testing will continue. I hope you find this information helpful. If you have any others questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our friendly client support at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. Brittney Montanye says
If I were to not swab her mouth for the hole 20sec cuz she wouldn’t sit still an if my fingers touched the qtips would the results be wrong..
Identigene says
Hi Brittney,
Until our lab processes your samples, we will not know if there was enough DNA on the swabs. Typically, we recommend to swab for 20 seconds in order to obtain enough DNA. If our lab finds your DNA (from touching it) or they do not find enough DNA to test with, we will contact you and ask for a recollection. Recollections are free of charge and are only done in efforts to test a clean sample. If testing continues and you receive results, our lab was able to pull enough DNA and the sample was not contaminated. I hope this information helps, if you have more questions please call us at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-8PM ET. Thank you for your comment!
V says
Kate, using identigene, is it mandatory to swab the mothers mouth as well as mine. To make it short, can I test the baby without the mother just using myself and the baby’s DNA??
Identigene says
Hi V,
Good question! We do strongly recommend including a sample from the biological mother because there is a chance the results will come back inconclusive without her, but she is optional. However, we can try to do the testing without her sample included, and we do get results on a regular basis when only testing the alleged father and the child.
The web link below will give you more information as to why the biological mother is sometimes needed to complete testing. I hope this information helps. Feel free to give us a call 1-888-404-4363, Monday-Friday 9aM-8PM ET, with any further questions you may have and we will be more than happy to help you.
Why do we strongly recommend including the biological mother?

Identigene says
Hi Judy,
Thank you for your patience! Our lab is highly accredited and led by experienced scientists. You can check our accreditation and lab certificates in the link below. We deliver 100% accurate results based on the samples we receive. This means we cannot ensure an envelope labeled “John Doe” is in fact the DNA from John Doe. We trust our customers to provide us with the DNA they want to have tested. Were you able to witness the test collection and mailing of the samples? Have in mind, mistakes are made both unintentionally and intentionally. We recommend our customers to witness the collection process to ensure the correct samples are sent in to our lab. If the integrity of one of the participant’s is a concern, please consider a court-admissible test. With a court-admissible test, DNA collections are witnessed and mailed by a disinterested third party. The testing fee is $329 and the results will be admissible in court. I hope this information helps answer your question. If you have more questions, please call us at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-6PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

My boyfriend wants to find out if his dad is his father but don’t know how to ask him to do a DNA test so by testing his uncle ( his dad’s brother) that have the same parents as his dad work the same as if him testing his dad
Identigene says
Hi Cristy,
Thank you for your interest in Identigene! To test a sibling of the alleged father the test is called an avuncular test. The Avuncular test is $399 and typically takes 5 business days to process. You can order this test directly from us over the phone and we will send kit supplies out to each person for collection. It is strongly suggested that you speak with one of our DNA testing consultants before ordering the test so that we can answer any further questions you may have.
DNA test results for avuncular testing fall into one of four categories: strongly supported (conclusive), somewhat supported, inconclusive, or not supported. Please give us a call at 888-404-4363 and we will be more than happy to assist you. Thank you for your comment!

My son has a child who we know is not his. He do not want to know if this boy is his. Is there anyway possible that I can get a test without the mother or father. By me being the grandmother can I get this test done.
Identigene says
Hi Cookie,
We do offer a grandparent test when the alleged father is not available for testing. The test including one grandparent is $399, with both grandparents the testing fee is $359. We do recommend the biological mother of the child to test to lower the chances of an inconclusive result (meaning no concrete answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’ was reached). Testing only as the grandmother has a high risk of an inconclusive result. Another factor to consider, is if the child is a minor, consent is needed from a legal guardian or parent. I hope this information helps. Please call our friendly client support with more questions or concerns at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-6PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

Hi Ace,
There are currently no DNA tests that can give results within minutes. DNA testing needs to be done with trained professionals in a DNA laboratory. IDENTIGENE can provide results in 2 full business days once samples are received. I was wondering. If we sent u sample and the other person put the wrong samples in each others envelopes. Would it be obvious that they did that. Example: mom switches hers and childs so that it comes up as not my child. Would a red flag pop up that then the mother sample is a perfect match for us. Im just worried she switched thier samples.
Amanda says
Hi Eric,
Great question! Our lab can test if there is a difference in the gender marked on the envelope, however, our lab trusts our customers to provide the correct samples from each participant. We recommend to witness the collection and sending off of the samples to ensure results based on the correct samples. You can also call us and request a recollection so you can witness the DNA swabbing if you believe there has been a switch. If honesty during sample collection is an issue, we recommend doing a court-admissible test. A court-admissible test is conducted by a disinterested third party who will witness and collect DNA samples for all participants after properly identifying them. This will diminish any chances of mistakes, intentional or unintentional, from being made. I hope this information helps. Please call us at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-6PM ET. Amanda says
Hi Marchee,
Our condolences during this difficult time. The DNA swabs would need to be collected before any embalming or other substances can contaminate the DNA. Once any chemicals enter the bloodstream, DNA can become contaminated and there is no way to obtain a clean sample for testing. If you have any more questions about the sample collection, please call us at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-6PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

Hi Need Answers!,
Did you take your test through IDENTIGENE? If not, we cannot comment on another lab or their procedures, we can only inform you about the services IDENTIGENE has to offer. We are a highly accredited lab following strict guidelines and procedures in order to ensure 100% accurate results. We do recommend all participants to be together, if possible, to witness the collection of all the samples. We trust our customer to provide us with accurate samples. This means we cannot verify that a sample labeled “John Doe†by our customer is in fact a sample from John Doe. Have in mind that mistakes can be made both intentionally and unintentionally. This is why we recommend a court-admissible test. Court-admissible tests are witnessed and collected by a disinterested third party. This avoids any possibility of dishonesty from happening during collection. We would not be able to tell the date the baby was conceived, we only test for relationship between participants. If you would like more information about the testing services IDENTIGENE offers, please call our friendly client support at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-6PM ET. The alleged father and my son took the dna test together. I haven’t got the 100% result. All I got was the alleged father and son isn’t enough match so they will need my dna testing too. Why did this happen? I’m thinking the test result should be fine without my dna sample. Do this mean the father and son isn’t a match or they are a match but just isn’t enough? I’m trying to understand why is this happening.
Amanda says
Hi Jowanna,
Great question! Typically, the mother’s DNA is not required. However, there are some instances where the mother’s DNA is required in order to reach a conclusive result. We are not questioning the fact that she is the mom. The mother’s DNA contains valuable information that can help strengthen the results of your paternity test. These rare cases when the mother is needed, can be the difference between and conclusive or inconclusive result.
Please see the link below on why we test or include the mother:

we tested over two years ago. the test came back 0% the father just came back and said that he faked the test by swabbing his mouth for a short second and then putting the swabs in a bottle of water b4 giving them to me… would this make a difference??
Identigene says
Hi Dying to Know,
Our lab tests for contamination and makes sure there is sufficient DNA for testing. This means if a sample has another DNA profile or is not strong enough, the lab will request a recollection in order to obtain enough DNA to test and produce a test result. If you obtain a conclusive result, anything below a 0% or above 99%, this means the sample had enough DNA and was not contaminated. I hope this helps answer your question. If you have any more questions or concerns, please call us at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-6PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

Hi my baby’s dad now wonts a dna we are not together he has a new girlfriend and I’m worryed as people has told me he is going to try and mess up the dna from the doctors he said that he will eat drink and smoke baccy with a bit of weed in it
Meisha says
Hello bexx,
We suggest waiting at least one hour after eating, drinking, brushing teeth, or smoking before collecting the samples. There is a possibility that the samples could be contaminated with food, drink, blood or even from smoking, but our lab will be able to detect this. We even detect if there are two different DNA samples on the same sample swab, as it will show two different DNA profiles. If samples are not contaminated our lab will be able to complete your testing and provide you with an accurate result. In the event that the samples are contaminated, we do offer a free recollection kit.

This is why the accreditations we hold as a laboratory are so important. However, the test is only as good as the samples provided to the lab. If we feel we don’t have enough DNA to evaluate we issue a notice of “re-collect” and we contact the tested to mail out new collection samples for free. When we have enough DNA to test we proceed through the process for an end result.
Our goal is to provide an accurate, quality service to all of our customers. An extremely important part of the testing process is how the samples are handled and managed as they travel step by step through each stage of the testing. The strict standards and procedures we follow extend to every single part of the process from the moment the samples arrive at our laboratory to the release of the analysis report when the testing is completed.
If you would like to have another test done where you can “witness” the collection process, you might have better peace of mind or even a different result if the wrong DNA was sent in the first time.
I hope this information helps. If you have any additional questions or concerns please feel free to contact us 1-888-404-4363 Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and we will be happy to assist you.

Good afternoon Yvonne,
In the instructions in the kit it does state to wait 1 hour before doing the collection after the participants eat or drink so I apologize if that information was missed. This step is to avoid food or drink particles from contaminating the samples. If samples are contaminated we would not have been able to provide you test results as it is not possible to produce results if the samples have any issues. Our lab even detects if there are two different DNA profiles on a sample swab. So if the samples sent in for your case were not contaminated our lab would have been able to complete your testing and provided you with an accurate result. If the samples were contaminated we would have asked for a recollection.
As far as testing blood compared to swabbing the cheek the accuracy would be the same. Your DNA does not change between a blood cell and cheek cell. Therefore we are able to obtain the same result using a cheek swab as you would testing blood. Doing a DNA test with blood is also a lot more expensive and the samples do not have as long of a shelf life as cheek swabs.
If you feel that the results were not correct we would strongly recommend doing a legal DNA test. With personal tests we do not have a 3rd party collector to witness who is participating, so our lab tests the DNA sent in to us by the customer. Legal DNA testing requires that all parties go to a designated collection facility so that a Chain of Custody can be established. Chain of Custody is the process used to maintain and document the chronological history of the samples (who has control of the samples at what time). At the collection facility, you will be asked to sign consent papers, designate an address where you want the results sent, and provide personal information such as photo identification. This process prevents anyone from being able to provide incorrect samples.
I hope this information helps. If you have any additional questions or concerns please feel free to contact us 888-404-4363 and we will be happy to assist you.

Hi I just got a letter in the mail saying after reviewing your case for the above name children our agency has determined that further discussion with you is needed. An appointment has been schedule for you… Does that mean he is the father I didn’t say he was or wasn’t he didn’t receive nothing in the mail
Meisha says
Good afternoon,
I do apologize but that is not information we send out in our letters. It is also very rare that we mail anything to our customers, unless it is requested. We would be more than happy to assist you with this. This would be easiest to address by calling us at 888-404-4363 and talking to a DNA consultant over the phone. We look forward to hearing from you.

Meisha says
Good afternoon Missy,
Unfortunately we would not be able to provide you information regarding who the father is strictly based on dates. You could ask your OBGYN to see if they have an answer to provide you.
Our recommendation for you would be to do a paternity test, once the child is born, with any potential fathers. This way we can test the child’s DNA against the alleged fathers to rule out those who do not have a match in DNA with the child.
If you have any further questions or concerns please contact us at 888-404-4363.
kelo says
Hey Kate what if the son and father DNA sample touched each other while being wet will the test read accurate or what?
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Kelo. If, as you describe, somehow DNA was mixed during collection, it is caught at the lab and results will not be issued until new samples can be collected. So it doesn’t affect your results, but it’s an inconvenience since you have to wait longer for them due to the need for recollection. If someone using our paternity test kit reads and then follows all directions included in the packaging, the process is smooth sailing! Thanks for the question.
Jill says
Hello
Is there a way that you can tell if the mother of the alleged father swap her mouth instead of the baby to match the father?
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Jill! Yes, the lab can detect that type of fraud in several different ways.
Bri says
Can you mess up a dab result by having someone spit on it after swabbing your mouth!
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Bri. What this could do is create two different DNA profiles on the single swab. This would be caught at the lab and they would ask for a recollection.

Hello.. my due day was the 16 of September of 2016 I was do 2 weeks. And 2 days before my due day I was with my boyfriend on the 14 of December of 2015 he finish in me I just had finish with my period as well 2 days before I had sex with him he gave me the plan b pill but I did NOT take it becsue I wanted a baby from him.. we did DNA test and it came out negative.. how is tha possible if his the only one I’ve been with….
Admin says
If the DNA collection and mailing wasn’t witnessed either by you or by an impartial third-party, then there is always a chance that the possible father could have submitted someone else’s DNA and claimed the DNA was his. Then of course the results would come back negative. I suggest you do a legal test. You pay a little more, but you can be sure that it’s his DNA that’s being tested and the results can be used in court. You can learn more about it here: http://dnatesting.com/court-admissible-paternity-tests-legal-paternity-tests/ or give us a call at 888-404-4363.

hey kate,
i was with two different guys a week apart. my last period was dec.24 2015. i was with guy 1 on Jan 1 2016. i was with guy 2 on Jan.8 2016. my due date was sept.29…which one is more likely th father?
Admin says
Hi, Shay! That is something you should ask your doctor. With their only being a week apart, it seems like it really could be either, but a paternity test would definitely give you a for-sure answer.
Donna C says
We received the test results back from IDENTIGENE excluding my son as the father. He says he smoked a cigarette within an hour of the swab. Could that have affected the results? How effective are results from the Paternal grandmother if there is a swab done? There is another possible father but he refuses to take a test so his mother is. Your report says 0% probability but my son wants to be sure.
Identigene says
Hi, Donna. If smoking prior to testing had affected the sample in any way, then the lab would have suspended testing and asked for new samples. Since your son was issued a report, then the samples weren’t compromised. Your son can be confident in the results.
Paul says
Hello! i would like to ask if cavities or tooth decay can affect taking DNA in cheeks?
Identigene says
Hi, Paul. No, those conditions do not affect cheek cells.
Adorthy says
Hello! I have a male friend who have a child with Autism Disorder, they plan to take paternity test, so my question is, they can get accurate result even the child is autism? as far as i know is it genetic disorder?
Identigene says
Hi, Adorthy. Even if autism were a genetic order, it wouldn’t affect a paternity test. We only use so-called “junk DNA” that doesn’t code for any physical or other characteristics. You can learn more about it here: http://dnatesting.com/what-is-junk-dna-and-how-does-it-affect-my-paternity-test/
Justine says
I have a question I wanted to if I made a mistake which am not sure if I did and put my daughter information on my envelope and my information on her envelope would that affect the DNA test
Identigene says
Hi, Justine. If you did make that mistake, the lab will figure it out and will simply ask for new samples. So it won’t affect your test results. No worries!
Brandon says
I have another question. So the man i tested just informed me he smoked a cigarette after i sent the test off. Would that affect the DNA test? If so how do i persuade him to take another one if i was asked to recollect? Would i need to swab myself and my daughter or just him?
Identigene says
Hi, Brandon. Smoking prior to swabbing doesn’t change DNA itself, but it can affect the quality of the sample, making it difficult to extract the DNA. If a report was issued to you, then you can safely assume smoking was not the problem. If it had been an issue, the lab would have stopped testing, not issued a report, and requested a new sample.
Anonymous says
Father swabs mouth twice for him and baby . Could the results come back positive
Identigene says
No. A red flag would see that the DNA profiles for both the alleged father and the child are identical and would ask for new samples. The only people who have identical DNA profiles are identical twins.
Anonymous says
If I sent in the child and possible father but due to them having the same name and me rushing I may have put the fathers in the child envelope and the child’s in the dads
All swabs belong to one person in the envelope I just don’t know if they are labeled correctly does that matter if it’s only them ; genes are compared right ? I don’t want to get a wrong answer just because it’s reading that my child can’t be his dad due to me mixing it up ?
HomeDNA Identigene says
Hi! The test doesn’t show age, but it does show a participant’s sex. So if the child is a male, then the mix-up won’t matter. If the child is a girl, the lab will suspend testing and call or email you for clarification, since the samples in that envelope were supposed to be for a male.
Jolisa says
I think the alleged father may have given false samples. He had already had the box open when he got to me. The test came back negative but my child looks a lot like him per a lot of people. I know he won’t agree to another test so what’s my other option?
HomeDNA Identigene says
Hi, Jolisa. You have reason to be suspicious. You should request a legal, witnessed paternity test with court-admissible results. That way, you can be sure no manipulation is going on. Our parent company, DNA Diagnostics Center, offers this test. You’re welcome to call 800-681-7162 (M-F, 8 am to 8 pm Eastern).
