Trust plays a huge part in paternity testing. We receive hundreds of calls questioning sample integrity. If the potential father swabs without the mother watching, there is a chance the mother will have doubts about the integrity of the DNA sample. Sometimes the best solution is a legal test. IDENTIGENE works with you to easily arrange for a third-party Collector to witness the swabbing of all involved participants; this way everyone knows the swabs belong to the right person.
Want to know the steps for legal testing? It sounds more complicated than it is. Trust us!
1. Call IDENTIGENE at 1-800-344-9583. In order to maintain chain of custody, we must send a collection kit directly to the approved collection facility. If you’ve already purchased an at-home kit, no problem. We’ll refund your account.
2. Pay for the lab fee and collection fee with a major credit card or money order
3. Agree upon a convenient place and time to meet with an IDENTIGENE sample Collector. This person will witness the DNA collection, help you fill out appropriate paperwork, verify photo identification and mail in the DNA specimens
4. Log in to dnatesting.com for your test results

Juan Houston says
I did a legal test and it is on 3rd day of testing. How many days of testing do y’all do before a person would have to send more samples?
breanna says
Hi Juan,
We give results in 2 Business Days so there may be a chance that the lab needs additional samples or that the ones sent in originally were contaminated or didn’t have enough DNA. If that happens, we would have contacted you. We recommend that you call our client support staff at 1-888-404-4363 to discuss your case, or, if you would like to reply with the email address used on the account and case number we would be happy to have client support contact you. Thank you!
Bryalee says
We swabbed the child and alleged fathers mouth. The results were 0.00%. How accurate is this because the childs mother is saying the test was wrong.
breanna says
Hi Bryalee,
Our test is 100% accurate. We are a highly accredited lab and work very hard to make sure we have safeguards to make this process 100% accurate. The one aspect that we can’t control is that each participant is honest in their collection and that there was no tampering with samples before it reaches our lab. As long as the samples come from each of the intended participants, your test will be 100% accurate. If you have any other questions regarding our accuracy or the many controls we use you can contact our friendly client support staff at 1-888-404-4363. Thank you!
Khaleel Jacobs says
If a legal DNA test has been taken through identigene, and the other party wishes to make claims that the test is inaccurate..how would this be handled.
Identigene says
Hi Khaleel,
Thank you for your patience! Legal DNA testing requires that all parties go to a designated collection site so that a Chain of Custody can be established. Chain of Custody is a legal process used to maintain and document the chronological history of the samples (who has control of the samples at what time). You are more than welcome to call us for these Chain of Custody forms we have on file. We are also a highly-accredited laboratory, with a 100% accuracy rate. If the other party wishes to claim against their Legal DNA test results, we do have scientists able to testify in court (entails a fee).
Below is the link to our accreditation list: (Here you can also view the certificates)

Identigene says
Hi Brittany,
We do not do outbound calls for results, however you are welcome to call in and check your test status. Upon verifying your case password, we would be more than happy to assist you with your test results or case information. You can also add an email address to your case by calling in and filling out a Report Release Form that our client support can email, fax or mail you. With completing the form and sending in a copy or image of your ID, you can add your email address and access your report online when it becomes available. If you provided a mailing address on your order form, we can mail one copy (free of charge) to the address provided. Any additional copies will cost $35. I hope this helps in answering your question. If you would like to set up our email or request a mailed copy, please call us at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-6PM ET. Thank you for your comment!

Deanna says

IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Deanna. On the kit’s box it gives the amount for the lab fee: $89. Is this what you wanted to know?
Trydel says
I was wordering when I fill out the paperwork them set up my user account how do I get a case number if im paying for it with a money order
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Trydel. Your case number will be assigned once your samples arrive here at the lab. You’ll receive a confirmation email and it will have the case number in it.
Nancy Kelly says
So if someone did not want to take responsibility of a child all they would have to do is have a friend buy a fake drivers license with the real father’s info on it and take the test for them with the third party present? How would they know the difference? Fake id’s are very easy to get. This makes me nervous.
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Nancy. Photographs are also submitted.
Kabe says
very easy to use , went to CVS to purchase , then went online to register , pay and get a case number .
It took about 4 days to get there via pre paid supplied envelope and hey presto i’m not the father .
In hindsight though I never had a witness for my swab , so to cover myself I’d like to do the test again (just for myself ) while you use the childs info supplied last week and I’ll have a Notary witness the swabbing and she can seal post the envelope.
Does that sound OK
cheers
Admin says
Hi, Kabe! There are very specific requirements on who can witness DNA collection for court-admissible results. I suggest you contact us directly at 888-404-4363 to see what your best options are.
Sabrinah says
Is it possible to have a legal test done without the mother? Also how much does a legal test cost?
Identigene says
Hi, Sabrina. The answer is yes, and the cost starts at $295.
Sanoyah says
I live in NH. I was wondering how does this test work if the potential father is deceased?
Identigene says
Hi, Sanoyah. We can test close biological relatives of the deceased to help establish paternity: one or both of his parents (if they’re still alive), his sister or brother, or other known children. You can read more about it here: https://dnatesting.com/paternity-testing-without-the-father/
Shea says
I had a test done in April and the results came back that my son was not the father. Now the mother is stating that we tampered with the results and wants to take us to court so my question is will we get the same results when we go to court as we got with this home DNA test or could the results change? We conducted the test properly so I know the test was done accurately just concerned about getting the same results.
Identigene says
Hi, Shea. As long as the samples submitted for testing are from the same participants that tested the first time, the DNA profiles for each participant should be exactly the same and the results will be exactly the same. The testing process for an at-home test versus for a legal court-admissible test is exactly the same in the lab. The only difference between these tests is the DNA collection step. Hope this helps!
Brittany says
So did you get the same results????
Sarah says
I am curious as to how this works. I am wanting to do the swabs for obvious reasons that my estranged ex is not my sons father. I do have a person of interest who is willing to take the test to satisfy his own curiosity. As far as receiving the results, are they also sent into the legal system and notifies the other individual thought to not be the father? Or are the results strictly private amongst the mother, child and suspected father?
Identigene says
Hi, Sarah. All results for both a legal test (with court-admissible results) and an at-home test (results for peace-of-mind or personal information only) are completely private and confidential. If you have questions about which type of test you should do, give us a call at 800-344-9583.
Monica says
What if a home test is done and it is negative and then we want the legal one…is the payment the same or is it discounted considering a home one was already done?
HomeDNA Identigene says
Hi, Monica. You need to test all over again for a legal test with court-admissible results, since the specific processes must be followed. You would need to talk to our sales team directly to see if you qualify for any discounts: 800-681-7162
Brenda says
When testing the alleged father and the child, does the mother have to test also? How are the results printed up if the names are not disclosed??
HomeDNA Identigene says
Hi, Brenda. The mother’s participation is not required, but it’s recommended in case it ends up being needed to strengthen results. The results report for a non-legal test does not have names, but it does show an identification number as well as the role of each participant in the test (mother, alleged father, or child).
John Doe says
Good evening. I want to test multiple children from the same mother including a set of twins, do I have to pay a separate fee for each child?
HomeDNA Identigene says
Yes, since you’re answering separate questions. With multiple participants, it’s probably simpler if you contact our parent company DDC directly to set up testing. That number is 800-681-7162 (M-F, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm ET).
