Is Paternity Testing without the Father Possible?
Customers often ask us how to do paternity testing without the father or if it’s even possible. There are many reasons why a possible father may not be available for DNA testing, such as he’s incarcerated, out of the country with the military, or simply unwilling. The good news is, there are ways to determine paternity without him. Testing for paternity without the father requires the participation of some of the father’s immediate family members such as his parents, siblings, or other known children and, as always, it is helpful to include the child’s biological mother in the DNA test as well. Click here to find out why testing the mother is important .
Family-reconstruction DNA tests such as those listed below can be used to determine paternity but keep in mind that they do not always produce test results that are as conclusive as a paternity test. The lab fee is also more than for a straight paternity test, since much more analysis is required.
Bottom line: Test with the father if you are able to! Your results are likely to be more conclusive and your test is more cost-effective.
In a paternity test, the DNA of the father, child and child’s biological mother (optional) are evaluated to determine if the alleged father is indeed the child’s father. When the father is unavailable for testing, other paternal family members’ DNA along with the child and the child’s biological mothers’ can help to determine paternity.
Grandparentage DNA Test for Paternity
The best DNA testing option to determine paternity without the father is using the DNA of the father’s parents, or the child’s paternal grandparents. In addition, the child needs to submit a DNA sample and the child’s biological mother should do likewise. This test gives the most conclusive results out of any family-reconstruction DNA test in helping to determine paternity. Although you may be able to discover paternity using only one grandparent’s DNA, results are more conclusive with both.
Avuncular DNA Test for Paternity
Another option for finding the paternity of a child without the father is using the DNA of a full sibling or siblings of the father; or in other words, the child’s aunt(s) or uncle(s). Like the grandparentage test, the child’s and child’s biological mother’s DNA are necessary for getting the most conclusive test results.
Siblingship DNA Test for Paternity
Your final option is a siblingship test. This test requires the DNA of another known child of the possible father. In this case, the mother’s DNA greatly helps with receiving conclusive results.

what can i do if i forgot to put my order form
Identigene says
Hi Quincy,
In forgetting your order form, we recommend waiting until your samples arrive to our lab. Once they arrive, we can link your information to the samples by looking up your case by your first and last name (or any other participants.) I hope this information helps, please call us at 1-888-404-GENE, Monday-Friday 9AM-6PM ET for any more questions. Thank you for your comment!
Paula says
Hi my husband has a child from a previous relationship and he does not know if the child is his. He believes it can be for his brother, cousin or father. How accurate would a paternity test be if he decides to get one. Also, if the child is not his will it say if the child is related to him? Or will it only say that he is not the father? Because he will want to know if one of his family members is the father.
Admin says
Hi, Paula. We can definitely do a paternity test with your husband and the child. It is extremely important that he let the lab know of the other possible fathers and that they are so closely related. Optimally, all possible fathers would consent to be tested. For more info, give us a call at 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern) and talk to one of our experts.

Father is not available. But 2 children….one conclusively is the father’s child, other not. Others mother is non compliant. Can we test the two potential siblings?
Identigene says
Hi, Jennifer. You can test the two potential siblings, but the chances of getting conclusive results are much higher if both mothers participate. To discuss your options with a relationship-testing expert, please give us a call at 888-404-4363.

Robin says
Hi Robin my husband is sick and his daughter is trying to talk him into signing everything that he owns over to her that’s been my husband for 10 years and plus some I want to know what type of DNA test could he take to find out if this is really his daughter he’s not one of volunteer Lee take it he says he thinks is his daughter but he’s not sure what can I do I’m his wife
Identigene says
Hi! If he is on the birth certificate, he is considered the legal father of his daughter whether or not she’s related to him by DNA. You may want to contact a family-law attorney to see what your options are, OK?
Shirley TenBroeck says
After several hundreds of dollars I spent on identigene to see if my best friend and I are sisters after both of our mom’s passed I have the same results – O
Inconclusive but not ruling out negative? Dissatisfied to say the least . Trying to find answers was not here for us both.
Identigene says
Hi, Shirley. I’m sorry you were disappointed. Unfortunately, DNA testing can’t always provide conclusive answers to all questions. Whenever relationship testing like yours is performed, there is a high risk of inconclusiveness if the mothers’ DNA cannot be included to help strengthen or confirm results.
Leigh says
Hi I’m just wondering my mum past away and my real dad says he’s not my dad but he will not do a DNA test but he as a daughter could we do the text to see and how much is it please
Identigene says
Hi, Leigh. You can, but keep in mind your chances of getting conclusive results are much better if your mother could have been included as well. I suggest you contact us for a free, confidential consultation to see which test might be best for your situation and for pricing. If you are in the United States, call 800-681-7162. Hi, Joanna. Congratulations on your baby boy! Unfortunately, in order to do a paternity test, there has to be an alleged father to compare your baby’s DNA to.

Paris says
Is there any way to find the Father of my child without knowing anything about him or family.. Not even his name
Admin says
Hi, Paris. As a DNA testing lab, our job is to test a child and a possible father’s DNA once they are submitted to us. You may want to consider hiring a private investigator to locate the possible father. If you find him and he gives written consent for testing, then we can test for you. Hope this helps!

Eneida says
I don’t believe my brothers son (my nephew) is his. I want to buy a test but I don’t want the parents to know. Would I be able to just swab my nephew & myself? I figured if we really are related there should be some similarities in the DNA.
Meisha says
We can test a sibling (sister or brother) of the alleged father to help answer paternity questions when the alleged father is unavailable. This type of test is an avuncular test.
The Avuncular test is $399 and results are typically available in 5 business days; this does depend on how your samples react to testing. You can order this test directly from us over the phone and we will send kit supplies out to each person for collection. To ensure that you select the correct test for your situation we recommend you contact us at your earliest convenience.
The test results for avuncular testing fall into one of four categories: strongly supported (conclusive), somewhat supported, inconclusive, or not supported.
As far as testing without the parents knowledge, we cannot test any sample, even for a personal test, unless we have a consent signature for each of the participants being tested and a legal guardian consent signature for anyone under the age of 18.
If you have any additional questions or concerns, or are interested in having us assist you with your DNA testing needs, please feel free to contact us 888-404-4363 and we will be happy to assist you.

What type of test and what’s the price if I want to find out if my brother is the father to this child but my brother is not able to take the test himself?
Meisha says
Whenever possible, it is always best to do a direct paternity with the alleged father and child. However, we do have other testing options when the alleged father is not available such as: Grandparent DNA (alleged father’s parents), Sibling DNA (alleged father’s other children), and Avuncular DNA (alleged father’s brother/ sister) tests. Any of these tests are $399, if testing both alleged grandparents it is $359.
These other type of tests is considered family reconstruction testing. To ensure that you select the correct test for your situation we recommend you contact us at your earliest convenience.
I have provided a link to additional testing information. If you have any additional questions or concerns, or are interested in having us assist you with your DNA testing needs, please feel free to contact us 888-404-4363 and we will be happy to assist you.

Would myself, the Biological mother of the deseased , and my child be enough to determine if the deseased is the father of my child.
Leslie Bryant says
Thank you for contacting Identigene. Whenever possible, it is always best to do a direct paternity with the alleged father and child. Grandparent DNA testing with both paternal grandparents offers the “next best thing” to a direct paternity test. With both grandparents, DNA testing can conclusively determine whether a son of the alleged grandparents could possibly be the biological father of a child.
Results probabilities for DNA testing with both paternal grandparents are typically 100% (exclusion) or 99.9% (inclusion), but there is a chance that the results will be inconclusive without the biological mother. Grandparent DNA testing with only one paternal grandparent will produce results that fall into one of four categories: strongly supported (conclusive), somewhat supported, inconclusive or not supported. If the biological mother is not available to provide a sample for testing, there is a greater likelihood that the results will be either somewhat supported or inconclusive.

I have three children. My middle may share a father with my oldest or my youngest, would this kit work to test two against eachother with my sample as well? Or do I need a siblingship kit?
Leslie Bryant says
Thank you for contacting Identigene. We do recommend the sibling test. Since everyone gets half of their DNA from the mother and half from father, we can determine the type of relationship for siblings:
– Full vs. Half
– Full vs. unrelated
– Half vs. unrelated
The Sibling DNA test is $399, and results are typically available in 5 business days; this does depend on how your samples react to testing. You can order this test directly from us over the phone and we will send kit supplies out to each person for collection. To ensure that you select the correct test for your situation we recommend you contact us at your earliest convenience.
The test results for siblings will be one of four categories: strongly supported (conclusive), somewhat supported, inconclusive or not supported. We do strongly recommend including a sample from the biological mother (both mothers when relevant). There is a greater chance that the results will come back inconclusive without her.
I hope this information helps. If you have any additional questions or concerns, or are interested in a Sibling test please feel free to contact us 1-888-404-4363 Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. E.T. and we will be happy to assist you.

Additional question regarding the sibling test: I have a half sister who I’m very close to. We have different mothers but the same father who died 5 years ago. Her mother died many years ago and our father’s parents (our paternal grandfather and grandmother) died too. My half sister heard a rumour when she was young that our grandfather was actually her father (her mother had an affair with him) and not our father. She wants to find out if our father is her father or if its our grandfather. Is there anyway that a sibling test could help? She does have a full sister who is supposed to be from her mother and my father. My father has no living siblings nor does my grandfather.
Identigene says
That is definitely a complicated scenario, Denise! Because it’s so complex I recommend contacting us directly to more fully discuss your possibilities for testing: 800-344-9583.

Meisha says
Good afternoon Tia Julius,
If you want to complete a DNA test for personal reasons, the DNA Paternity Test collection kit is perfect for you. If you need a test for any legal reason, please contact us at 888-404-4363 so we may assist you with the legal testing process.
The personal DNA Paternity Test kit can be purchased at your local Wal-Mart, Rite Aid and CVS pharmacies. The kit includes all supplies necessary to submit samples, and makes the process simple and convenient for you. You can purchase the kit for about $30 at any of the participating pharmacies. The lab fee to test 1 alleged father, 1 child and the biological mother (strongly recommended, but optional) is $89.
The kit includes an order form, 3 collection swabs for the alleged father, one child and the biological mother, 3 specimen envelopes, an instruction booklet and a postage paid envelope for mailing your samples to our lab. Prior to collecting your samples, please read all of the instructions carefully. All sections of the order form and the specimen envelopes need to be filled out completely. Any missing information can possibly delay the release of your results.

Would I be able send in a shirt with his semen on it and ear qtips where I swabbed our kids cheeks and put in separate sandwich bags be tested to see if he is the father?? I am willing to pay the $89 lab fee.
Meisha says
Good afternoon,
The preferred DNA sample industry wide is a cheek cell. These samples are obtained by swabbing the inside of the cheek using a buccal swab that is provided in our testing kits. The cheek cell is the easiest sample to work with and any other type of sample is considered a special specimen. All special specimens require an additional lab fee of $400. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to produce results with a special specimen, and we will still need consent from the participant whose DNA we would be testing.
All special specimens need to be pre-approved by our lab and often times require a specialized collection kit to be sent to you. Please contact us 888-404-4363 for an approval and instructions on how to send the sample us.
we do have other testing options when the alleged father is not available such as: Grandparent DNA (alleged father’s parents), Sibling DNA (alleged father’s other children), and Avuncular DNA (alleged father’s brother/ sister) tests.

I have two kids i want to do a dna on because im unsure if they are mine. I also have doubt mayb my brother could be the father of one of the kids but ofcourse there is no way i can get a dna from my brother or the mother. What do i do
Meisha says
Good afternoon Oscar,
To get the strongest results we would need both the biological mother and your brother to test with yourself and the two children in question. If your brother is a full sibling then there is a rare possibility of getting a false positive, especially if the biological mother does not participate.
If the biological mother and the other alleged father will not participate, our lab will still need to be aware that the second alleged father is your sibling so they can take that into consideration while testing.
I hope this information helps. If you have any further questions or concerns about a paternity test, please contact us at 888-404-4363.

Hello I”m interested in testing a child that could possibly be my son baby. My son is not able to take the test so I want to test me, his father and the baby. I just purchased the DNA Paternity Test but I’m not sure if I got the right one. The mother of the child is willing to test along with myself and my son father. If by chance I purchased the wrong one pls email me on how to purchase the test for the grandparents. Also can I return his test back to the store where I purchased it. Pls help need this ASAP…
Thank You,
LaVonda
Meisha says
Good afternoon LaVonda,
The test you purchased in store is a Paternity test, meaning for an alleged father and child to test. You will need to contact the store you purchased it from to see if you can return it as that is up to that store.
We offer the Grandparent DNA test by phone. With both grandparents, DNA testing can conclusively determine whether a son of the alleged grandparents could possibly be the biological father of a child.
Results probabilities for DNA testing with both paternal grandparents are typically 0% (exclusion) or 99.9% (inclusion), but there is a chance that the results will be inconclusive without the biological mother. Grandparent DNA testing with only one paternal grandparent will produce results that fall into one of four categories: strongly supported (conclusive), somewhat supported, inconclusive or not supported. The biological mother will help to strengthen the results. If the biological mother decides not to provide a sample for testing there is a greater likelihood that the results will be either somewhat supported or inconclusive.
I hope this information helps. If you have any additional questions or concerns, or are interested in a Grandparent test please feel free to contact us 888-404-4363 and we will be happy to assist you.

Hi, Jessica. Without knowing the name of the child’s potential father or even how to contact him, it’s most likely impossibly to determine paternity. If she does locate him, however, either through a private investigator or other means, an IDENTIGENE DNA test could definitely determine whether or not he is the father.
DRJ says
My son father stated that he took a DNA of our son 4 yrs ago and the results stated that it could be his brother or uncle child. Now there is no doubt in my mind about my son being his child because he is his child. What I wanted to know was what kind of home paternity test could he have done on my son without my DNA or my permission that would tell him some bull crap about it being his brother or uncle child instead of just saying it is or isn’t his child? Can I sue him in court for doing this behind my back?
Identigene says
Hello! We cannot give legal advice, but at the time an alleged father orders a paternity test, he signs a document that states he is also a legal guardian for your child. This would allow him to have testing performed without your knowledge. In most cases, the mother’s DNA is not needed in order to obtain an accurate paternity test result, although we do recommend having the mother tested also. If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact one of our helpful client support representatives at 888-404-4363.
Robin says
This a long complicated one. My husbands maternal grandmother did not know who her mother was. She was left on the doorstep of her “father”, and has half siblings. We want to know if we are actually blood relatives. My husbands grandmother has past away along with the older generations. His uncle(mothers brother) has also passed away, so it is just his mom and sisters left along with cousins. How can we test to see if there is blood relation?
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Robin. Are you trying to figure out if your husband is a blood relation to his great-grandfather, the “alleged” father to your husband’s grandmother. Is that the relationship you’re looking for? Is that correct?
shun says
We purchased the paternity test in the store then realized it may not give accurate results. But my husband lost both his parents so we only have the father’s sister for dna I don’t not want to pay 400 for a special test so will this kit in the store give me close enough results of they are related. She’s older in age and we need the results asap.it will either be neg or positive right?
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Shun! Any kind of DNA testing (other than straight paternity or maternity testing) that requires more diagnostic work in the lab will cost more than our standard $89 fee. You already have the kit…that’s step 1. Now, call our Client Support Center at 888-404-4363 during business hours (you can also live-chat on our website) and they can thoroughly explain what your options are. Hope this helps!
Jennifer says
We used Identigene to determine positive paternity of my niece. We were able to swab him directly and send it in along with hers. We are not able to get another swab from him. Can Identigene use his DNA markers from the first test to determine possible paternity of another child?
Thank you!
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Jennifer! We can only use the same markers if the test was completed within the last 30 days. For full info on what your options are, feel free to give our experts in the Client Support Center a call at 888-404-4363. They’re also available via live chat on our website during business hours.
Jake says
Do you provide your service to international clients? I am from the United Kingdom.
I would like to establish my own paternity, I can definitely provide my own, my mother’s and a first cousin of the alleged fathers’ (my first cousin once removed) samples, and possibly those of two full siblings of mine, confirmed as children of the alleged father.
What degree of accuracy will your test using the above samples provide, would it be adequate to settle the question of paternity for probate purposes? What would be the cost of the necessary procedure?
I prefer email to telephone due to time zone difference.
Thank you.
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Jake! Yes, we process DNA tests for clients all over the world and can definitely help you. Without the participation of the possible father, the price of testing is quite a bit higher. The reason for this is simply that it requires much more extensive testing and analysis at the lab. Family reconstruction testing such as what you are looking at doing starts at $399. You said you prefer email to phone, but setting up such a test requires doing so via phone. We don’t set anything up like this by email.
Our offices are in Salt Lake City, Utah, and therefore you are seven (7) hours ahead of us. We are open 2 PM to 11 PM your time, Monday through Friday, and our number is 888-404-4363. Hope this helps!
Felicia Franklin says
I have a 6yr old daughter who father passed away in April. Would I need to purchase the Sibling DNA testing kit to estashblish DNA? How accurate are the results? What would be the price for this?
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Felicia. Are you trying to establish if the potential father who passed away is your daughter’s biological child? Without the father’s DNA, lab costs are higher than a test that includes a father’s sample. This is because more extensive testing is involved. Feel free to call in to our Client Support Center at 888-404-4363 on any business day between 9 AM and 6 PM Eastern Time. One of our friendly representatives can help you decide which test is best for your situation and how much it costs.
Dawn says
I had already bought a Paternity test thinking that since I am the grandmother of the father it should work. After reading more on DNA testing I am now wondering if I am correct or if I am wrong. I already did the swabs on myself & my grandchild. I just want the piece of mind. Can I still send the swabs in & get the results or is there a special test for grandparents? My phone is not working at moment so I can not call.
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Dawn. Yes, we definitely do grandparent testing. Because of the extra lab analysis that is necessary for such a test, it runs about $399. I highly recommend you borrow a friend’s phone to call our Client Support Center for complete info, exact pricing, and/or to set up your test. The number is 888-404-4363.
Toni says
Ok, my so called biological father died, I supposedly have 2 half siblings. One of the siblings agreed to a dna test. I can also get my mom to do it also. Here is the monkey wrench, my so called biological father’s wife is stating that I might be the child of my so called biological father’s dad, meaning my grandfather, which is also passed. Will one of your test be able to tell me for sure if my so called biological dad is my dad and my siblings are my siblings?? Trying to find my missing pieces so I can have peace
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Toni. We can do a half-sibling test to see if you have a biological relationship with that potential sibling. What you should do is call the experts in our Client Support Center at 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern Time) and they can discuss the details with you along with pricing.
David says
I am trying to help out a friend of mine. We live in Germany and he is half German and half American. He is an adult and would like to claim his American citizenship. His father left before he was born and so he grew up with his German mother. He knows who his father is but neither wants anything to do with eachother my friend just wants to prove his father is truly his father so he can claim his citizenship. He wants to do this for his two children who may also be able claim their American citizenship through him as they both want to move to the US permanently. My friend has half siblings from the father that may be willing to do the dna test. Would you know if this is possible with the half sibling test and is the cost $399?
IDENTIGENE says
Hello, David! Our experts in Client Support say they’ve never seen a case where an embassy has accepted a half-sibling test to determine paternity and then use those results to grant citizenship. We highly suggest your friend contact the U.S Embassy to get specific requirements (what they will and will not accept), vis a vis DNA testing under these circumstances. Usually in these cases, the potential father, the mother and the child are tested. Even though they don’t have a relationship, perhaps your friend’s father would agree to send in samples for this purpose. Hope this helps. If you want to follow up on your question or get more details, it’s easier and faster to speak to us directly at 888-404-4363. Our Client Support Center handles hundreds of international cases and are highly-experienced in this area. They are open M-F from 3 PM to midnight, Germany time.
Michelle says
Hello,
My nieces mother and myself are trying to establish paternity for my niece. Her alleged father my half brother is unable to take the test, is my dna close enough to test against even though we are only half siblings?
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Michelle! As a half-sibling to your brother, you don’t share enough DNA with him to help out your niece who’s in the next generation down. The best choices for testing are:
(1) Test your niece with a known child of your brother’s (if he has other kids)
(2) Test your niece with both biological parents of your brother (if they are available).
In either case, the child’s mom’s DNA should be tested too. Hope this helps!
UC says
Can I test my son to know if my brother fathered him with my wife
IDENTIGENE says
Hi! If your brother is willing, we can test him, you, the child and the child’s mother to determine paternity. It’s best if all four of you submit samples to be tested. You’d want to make sure to note on the paperwork that the possible fathers are brothers. To get all your questions answered, please call our Client Support Center at 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern). Also, here’s a great article about this: http://dnatesting.com/paternity-test-when-two-alleged-fathers-are-related/
UC says
thanks for responding. I want to add something to my question. I meant if the dna will point to me as the dad if indeed my brother fathered child with my wife. basically will it show me as father just because my dna is close to my siblings dna.
IDENTIGENE says
In the article I linked to, it talks about this. Unless you and your brother are identical twins, testing will definitely be able to differentiate between the two of you. You share some of the same DNA, but not all of it! Does this help answer your question?
Karen says
I only have the MAYBE paternal Grandmother of child in question. And myself her mother. The Paternal Maybe Grandfather has passed away . Will a DNA test show if she is related to the Maybe Paternal grandmother. How much will this cost for the three of us to be tested. Also the MAYBE Paternal Grandmother lives in a different state.will we be able to test her?
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Karen. Thanks for reaching out to us! We can do a single-grandparent test, which costs $399. Please call 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern time), and a Client Support Representative will be happy to explain the test and its likelihood of giving you the answer you seek, answer your other questions, send testing materials for you and your daughter, and send testing materials separately to the possible grandmother. Hope this helps!
Karen says
Thank you. I will be seeking help after Christmas , as this is costly .
IDENTIGENE says
Yes, this kind of family reconstruction testing requires extensive analysis at the lab level. Hence the cost is higher than for a straight paternity test. Enjoy the holidays, Karen!
Karen says
How would i pay for this? A cashiers check? As I really do not want to use a credit card.
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Karen. You can send a money order in with your samples, if you prefer. Happy New Year!
Mark Nash says
hi I m wanting to see if a girl that’s only just contacted the family to say my brother is her father how. how much pls
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Mark. Testing one possible father, one child and the child’s mother is $89 + the cost of the kit.
Christine says
Both of my parents have passed. But we’ve always heard stories that my father wasn’t my father. I’m the youngest of 5. And there are 5 years between my sister and I. She is the 4th born. Is there a way to tell if my sister and I have the same father?
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Christine. Yes, we can do a siblingship test to determine if you and your sister have the same parents. Because of the extensive analysis involved, at $399 this test is more expensive than a paternity one. You are welcome to give us a call at 888-404-4363 to get your questions answered and/or set up the test. Good luck!
Nellie Atoruk says
this is complicated.. my ex-husband passed away over 13 years ago.. I believe he may have a few children with different women. there is one girl.. over 20 years old.. her mother passed away years ago also.. the girl would like to know who her biological father is.. the problem is the girl is my first cousin’s daughter. I did not let her know that my ex-husband might be her father. I got one son that is alive that is my son’s (deceased) brother same mother/father. would the test work even if the girl’s mother is my cousin? also my deceased son probably have a daughter now but we did not do a test.. her mother also passed away years ago. I did get hair samples from both my son (deceased) and the presumed daughter.. she is 8 years old.. I never did the dna on that one also.. years ago it cost over $ 1,000.00 to do the testing.. I still got the hair samples safely put away.. I would like to confront the girl that need to find out because I need to know first.. if it will work.. I hope I make sense.. thank you..
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Nellie. Yes, your situation is complicated! We have charted your family and the best we can determine is that we can do a “half-siblingship vs. unrelated” test to see if the girl who wants to know her paternity has the same father as your son who is still living. Whether she is the daughter of your first cousin doesn’t matter in this case. What we would need is the girl’s DNA, your living son’s DNA and your DNA. The most reliable samples are obtained from cheek cells, and those can be collected easily using special swabs we provide. Hair samples (unless you also have the root) are unreliable and it’s very expensive to extract the DNA from them. If all three of you are willing to be tested using swabbed DNA, the cost is $399. What you would want to do is call us directly at 888-404-4363 to get details and arrange the test. Please keep in mind that a test like this where the potential father’s and one of the mother’s DNA is missing has a chance of giving inconclusive results. Give us a call and one of our experts will be happy to help you, whatever you decide.
pam says
Yes I’ve been wrecking my brain trying to figure out how to establish partenity for my youngest child his father has passed away but i have a older child who i know is his and i wanted to know if i could test him to find out if they have the same father is that possible. Legally i woud like to have this proven in a court is that possible
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Pam! We can definitely do a full sibling vs. half sibling test between the two children at a lab cost of $399. If you want to use the results for legal purposes, DNA collections and submissions will need to be performed by an unrelated 3rd party. Please call us at 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern) and one of our expert representatives will be happy to explain the process to you.
MutherlyLuv says
Hello there,
I want to try and do an Avuncular DNA test between myself and the man who may be my uncle (on my father’s side), to determine if his brother (who is currently missing) may be my biological father. I cannot get my mother to participate, so can you suggest who else on my mother’s side I could use to get a more conclusive test? I have an uncle and his daughter willing to participate.
IDENTIGENE says
Hi! It’s difficult to answer your question without having all the details. I highly recommend you contact us directly at 888-404-4363 to see what your best options are to maximize conclusiveness. Here are some things to consider: Is your uncle a full sibling of your possible father’s? That makes a difference. What would be hugely helpful are samples from your possible uncle’s parents. Are either of them still living? Does your possible father have any known children who are definitely his?
Halley says
Can I use the alleged father DNA markers from a previous test to determine possible paternity of another child who was previously tested?
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Halley! I can’t speak for other labs, but if it’s within 30 days from the original test, we can definitely do that, provided the alleged father signs a new consent form. If it’s been more than 30 days, we ask that all participants submit new samples. Hope this helps!
Taylor says
My grandfather passed away last month and after his passing I learned of a child I didn’t know He had. He was 71 so obviously his parents are gone. Would I be able to test my supposed uncle with my dad even though they had different moms?
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Taylor. We can do a half-siblingship test, but I want to give a caution. Unless both mothers are available and willing to also submit DNA, there’s a high chance of getting an inconclusive result. The test would be $399. To speak to one of our experts about your options, please contact us directly at 888-404-4363. Thanks!
Tjasa says
Hallo!
I know That 1 marker of The baby should match with The father and another one with The mother.
I would like to know if you can identify which marker belongs to The mother and which to The father without making laboratory testing.
For example if you have a profile only of The mother and one marker is 17 10.
Could you know without testing if The baby gets from The mother 17 or if he gets 10?
Another question is if you know if in The laboratoryes they save results? I already Did one test and if I do again will they see That they already have results for this person?
Thank you for your answer
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Tjasa. In the report for a test between a possible father and child, we clearly show which marker is the possible father’s and which is the child’s. You can therefore assume that each gene for the child that doesn’t match the possible father’s comes from the mother. The same principle would apply if we were testing the mother with the child instead of testing the possible father with the child.
Our lab does save results from previous tests. However, if it’s been more than 30 days since the last test, we do request that participants send in new samples. Hope this helps! If you have additional questions, don’t hesitate to contact our Client Support Center at 888-404-4363.
Tjasa says
Thank you for you answer.
So your laboratory save The test results, but does The laboratoryes share The data between each other?
IDENTIGENE says
All information is kept confidential. We only share data upon the customer’s request.
robert mcgill says
Can a test of my DNA indicate if my parents were siblings? One of them is dead and left no DNA record and the other is unwilling to help.
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Robert. Without their availability, it’s impossible to tell. We have to have something with which to compare your DNA. Sorry!
Sue says
My brother is trying to confirm if our uncle is his father Can you test the children with hair or a cigarette filter from the father’s side. Uncle will not admit nor will he not participate in a swab.
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Sue! We can do testing using DNA samples from sources other than cheek swabs. We don’t do cigarette butts for paternity testing, but we can do hair samples if they have the root attached. Because it’s much more difficult to extract the DNA from these types of samples, the cost is considerably higher: $400 vs. $89, and it takes up to 4 weeks to process vs. 2 days. All that being said, we would still require the uncle’s signed consent in order to conduct testing, so unless you can talk him into agreeing to be tested, we can’t do anything for you. I’m sorry!
Richard says
Ok. Im wanting to know if im related to the family ive been living with (which is my supposed fathers parents). And he never comes around and my biological mom is in another state. Is there anyway i can test with my “fathers” sister (my aunt) and be able to get an awnser?
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Richard. We can definitely do a test with you and your aunt, but we would need your mother’s DNA as well, if she’s willing, in order to get the most conclusive result possible. It’s OK if your mother lives in a different state…we would simply send DNA collection materials directly to her. Are your grandparents not willing to test as well? That would be ideal. To get all your questions answered or to arrange for a test, please feel free to call us directly at 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern Time).
Diana says
Can I test my 2 girls to see if they have the same dad? How much will that cost?
IDENTIGENE says
Hi, Diana. We can definitely do a full-sibling vs. half-sibling test. The cost is $399. Please give us a call at 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern Time) and one of our experts can answer your questions and set up the test, should you decide to do it.
DKells says
Is it possible to have my aunt tested both of my parents are decease.
IDENTIGENE says
Hi! Yes, we can do what’s called an avuncular test to determine this family relationship. Please give us a call at 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern). One of our experts can assess your individual case and the chances of getting a conclusive result. They can also give you pricing information.
aquisha says
My daughter in her dad was tested he match everyone but 7 the man explained at thr lab corp that i needed to be tested to make the test stronger
IDENTIGENE says
Did you mean that there are 7 mismatches or that there is only mismatch at the 7th position? It wasn’t clear from what you wrote. It’s not unusual for a lab to request the mother’s DNA in order to strengthen results, just so you know!
Tammi Ledford says
my half brother and I want to make sure we really or from the same father, what can we do?
Admin says
Hi, Tammi. We do a half-sibling vs. full-sibling test at a cost of $399. I’m assuming the father in question is not available to test? You are welcome to give us a call at 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern), and one of our experts can assess your situation and give you personal counsel on what’s best to do.
Regina says
I have a question. I would like to know if the man that raised me was indeed my biological father. I know he had a half brother, and three other children from a previous marriage. I read that I would have to have at least one of their dna tested, but the problem is that I have no access to my mother’s dna because she has passed away along with the man that raised me and my brother (that my mother had from a previous marriage). I was basically an only child. I hate to ask these questions, but since my mother’s passing there have been some concerns that the man who raised me was not my biological father. What, if there is, test can I take to see?
Admin says
Hi, Regina. If one of your possible father’s children were willing to test, we could do a half-siblingship vs. unrelated DNA test between you and them. Without your mother’s DNA, however, and without your possible father’s sibling’s participation, there is a high likelihood that you could get inconclusive results. The test costs $399. I suggest you contact us directly when we’re open (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern time) and talk to one of our experts. You can explain in more detail and they’ll be able to better assess if this is an option to you. I wish you all the best!
feeling empty says
My mother has told me that she does not want me to find out who my father is until she’s dead and gone I think it’s very unfair both my sister’s have the privilege of knowing who their dad is but nobody will tell me who my dad is I know of 3 possible men I don’t know if my mother is willing to participate in the DNA test but I’m 27 years old and I deserve to know who my father is the man that my mom has been with since before I was born he didn’t want me to know he was not my real dad but when I got older he started being mean to me treating me different hollering and screaming at me throws it up in my face that I’m not his daughter and I need to get me a DNA test done and find my dad that he’s looked at me for 27 years and it’s time my real dad had to look at me I don’t want no material items or money I just want to know who my dad is and to feel that empty space in my heart I just want to have a dad and know what it’s like to have a dad that loves me what do I need to do to get this process going and how much is this going to cost me? I use to not care about not knowing who my dad is I blocked it out for years but I feel the emptiness and it don’t feel good especially when the man that raised me treats me like garbage please tell me what I need to do I have never done anything like this and I need all the advice I can get I have no help with this I have no support neither
Admin says
Hi there. I’m so sorry about what you’re going through. That’s rough. Since you are of legal age, you can test with whomever you’d like without your mother’s permission. In most cases, we won’t need her DNA to get conclusive results. The lab fee forthe test is $89 to test one child + one possible father. You can get the DNA collection kit at Walmart, CVS or RiteAid. It costs $21.88 to $24.99, depending on where you buy it. I wish you all the best and hope you find the answers you’re looking for.
solomon says
we are 5 brother and a sister same father and mother ,both dead also my father have a sister is a live and my mother have a brother is alive. Now we found out that we have half sibling 2 brothers their mom dead none of their mother side is a live
Admin says
Did you have a question, Solomon?
solomon says
The two alleged siblings that we found out claim that we share the father with them, what shall we do if our both mother and father dead, but my father have a sister i a live and my mother have brother is a live.
Admin says
Solomon, we can do what’s called family reconstruction testing…where we attempt to determine a biological paternity relationship by testing and comparing the DNA of other close family members. I suggest you contact us directly at 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern), and one of our experts can assess your individual case and give you your best options.
Chelseigh says
My husband recently had a man reach out to him claiming to be his half-brother. Since my husband’s father refuses to do a DNA test is there still a way to determine if they are in fact half-brothers?
Neither mother is available. It would just be the two possible brothers.
Admin says
Hi, Chelseigh. It’s always better if mothers and the possible father are willing to participate. We can do the test with just the two of them, but the chances of getting an inconclusive result are much higher than they would be if others could be tested too. If you’re interested in learning more about what your particular options are, give our experts a call at 888-404-4363.
Collyn Rivers says
I have reason to suspect my grandfather (or his brother) was my father. Both are long siu
All since dead and I know of no other relative.
Can any DNA test assist (or shall I never know?).
Admin says
Hi, Collyn. Are your father and mother still living?
Cara says
Is it possible to test myself and my sister to see if we have the same father without having to test either of our mothers or father
We have different mothers but possibly the same father.
Admin says
Hi, Cara! Unfortunately, your chance of getting inconclusive results increases significantly when there are so few participants. Call us at 888-404-4363 and one of our experts will be happy to go over your options with you.
Terry Holmes says
My son’s father just died and was creamated, his father’s parents are also deceased. However we located his mother’s sister. Can we use her DNA to prove that was his father?
Admin says
Hi, Terry. Seeing as she would be your son’s great-aunt, that’s a distant enough relationship that there is a chance of getting inconclusive results, even with your participation. I suggest though that you contact us directly ton consult with one of our experts. 888-404-4363.
Kortney says
How much would it cost to see if we are cousins?
Admin says
Hi, Kortney! Family relationship testing (testing for biological relationships that isn’t a straight paternity test between father and child) starts at $399. To consult about what options are available to you, I suggest you call us directly and speak to one of our experts. It’s 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern).
Diamond says
My daughter father could be my son father. My son is in Prison. Can I get my son to swab his mouth with q-tips and his dad also get him to swab with q tips , alleged dad lives out of state. Can I also get my daughter and son to swab with q-tips and send it to you? My question is can I use the q-tips??
Admin says
Hi, Diamond. You can’t use Q-tips…although they look similar, they’re not made of the same material as the swabs in our kit. The kit swabs are specifically designed to optimize DNA collection and make extraction by our robots efficient. As for everyone being in different places, I suggest you contact us directly and one of our experts can help you figure out how to get everyone’s samples collected and submitted most easily and at the lowest cost to you. Our phone number is 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern).
Geri says
I am a 40 year old female. I believe that my biological father may not be who I thought it was. Unfortunately, my biological mother, (thought to be) biological father, and (might be) biological father are all deceased. I do have two maternal siblings. How would I go about testing to see if I have the same biological father as my two siblings? Which test is most accurate in this situation? What is the accuracy of this type of test? I don’t want to waste my money if I am likely to receive an inconclusive result.
Admin says
Hi, Geri. Rather than trying to figure it all out here online in a back-and-forth conversation, I suggest you call us directly to speak with one of our family relationship test experts. They can assess your individual situation and who is available for testing and give you straight talk about whether or not you’re likely to get conclusive answers to your question. I will say that this type of testing starts at $399 due to the extensive amount of analysis required. Our number is 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern). I sincerely wish you all the best!
Kei J says
Is there anyway i can find out if my cousin is really my sister? Do not have mom or dad for testing.
Admin says
Hi, Kei! If it’s just the two of you testing, then no. If there are other close relatives willing to test, then possibly. I suggest you consult with one of our experts at 888-404-4363 to see what your possibilities are. Good luck!
Karen says
My son recently passed away, & a pregnant ex of his claims he’s the father of her unborn child. My son’s father is deceased as well, & there are no other children between myself & my son’s father. I know I could have a grandparentage test done with the pregnant ex. I was wondering if a prenatal test could be done with the pregnant ex, using property of my deceased son (cell phone) that was packaged by the police which contains quite a bit of his dried blood on it would produce a more accurate result?
Admin says
Hi, Karen. I’m so sorry for your loss. We don’t do prenatal testing, although there are other companies that do. It’s quite expensive ($1,000-2,000) and I’m not sure if they would be willing to extract a DNA sample from the dried blood. For the alleged father, they usually use a cheek swab and then use blood from the mother to obtain her profile and the baby’s. If you’re willing to wait until after the baby’s born, it’s much simpler and much less expensive ($399 for baby+ mother+ one paternal grandparent or $350 for baby+mother+both paternal grandparents). If you want to talk directly with an expert about your options, you’re welcome to call us at 888-404-4363. Again, I’m very sorry for your loss and wish you and your family well.
Karen says
I knew the cost for prenatal testing was more expensive, but I’m strongly considering going that route for namesake purposes. The pregnant ex intends to give her child (if it’s a boy) my son’s name. I want to know for certain before she does so. Even if the child is a girl, I want to know for certain that he’s in fact the father, before she gives the child my son’s surname.

Hello there!
Is it possible do know if a child i son to me(father) or grandfather ? For example if you take dna samples from me, mother and the son, can It accurately say if it is mine or my sons grandfather ? Since we share the same DNA I am kinda unsure how it works….
Admin says
Hello there back atcha! I think I may need a little more clarification on what you’re asking. Can you please rephrase it? Thanks!
Maria says
Hi my husband and I are separated, I’m expecting a baby I’m 22 weeks, we also have a 2 year old daughter but he has the doubt that the baby I’m expecting isn’t his but he also refuses to do a paternity. Can I do a DNA test with my unborn child and my 2 year old daughter to see if they have the same father?
Admin says
Hi, Maria! We don’t do prenatal testing, although there are other labs that do. Keep in mind that it’s very expensive ($1,000-$2,000) and not covered by insurance. To determine paternity, they usually take blood from the mother in order to get the unborn child’s profile and then cheek cells from the possible father. The profiles are then analyzed. If you want to do a sibling test instead of a paternity test with the samples, there will be additional fees. If all this is cost-prohibitive, I suggest you wait till after the baby’s born and do testing then. Hopefully, your husband would agree to test by then. You still have a long way to go in your pregnancy. Wishing you all the best!

My mother was a victim of rape and I was raised by whom I considered my father. I did not find out about the rape until my father had passed. The rapist is also deceased. I don’t want to add more pain to my mother by trying to find out whom my real father is. This has been weighing heavily on me since finding out. Is there any way to get DNA from my fathers personal pocessions such as a ring or wallet, etc and my DNA to find out if he was in fact my father or if I am the product of the rape? Thank you!
Admin says
Hi, Linda. I’m so sorry about the loss of your father and for the predicament you find yourself in. Unfortunately, there probably isn’t enough DNA on the objects you mentioned to conduct a paternity test. I’m assuming the parents of both men are also deceased, correct? Other possibilities for you to test with would be a sibling of yours who is a known child of your deceased father or perhaps your deceased father’s brother or sister. In any test scenario, your chances are much better of getting conclusive results if your mother’s samples are included. Tough as it is, that may be a conversation you want to have with her.
Marley Jones says
I want to find out if my daughter is related to possible family. Her father was an only child and passed away when she was young. Her grandparents have passed away as well. Several great aunts and uncles are still living. Can she test DNA with them? Thank you Marley
Admin says
Hi, Marley! I’m sorry about the loss of your child’s father. Unfortunately that’s too distant of a relationship to get conclusive results. If the father had another known child, then that would be a possibility, as long as you submitted your DNA as well. This is probably not the answer you were hoping for; I’m sorry.
Don Jacobs says
Hello,
Can a DNA test between brother and sister determine if the siblings have the same father we dont need to who just if they have the same father?
Thanks
Admin says
Hi, Don! This is a great question. We can definitely do this test, but there is a high chance of getting inconclusive results if the mother is not willing to participate is well. Is it possible for her to test also?
Jesus says
I have a question is it possible to do a dna test between two children to know if they have the same father but the mother of each child are sisters and the father is not available for testing
Admin says
Hi, Jesus! It would be essential for whoever orders the test to tell the lab that the two mothers are related. This way, they can do more extensive testing and analysis, if necessary. For more details, I suggest you contact us directly and talk to one of our experts: 888-404-4363.
Mindy Derfler says
My husband is deceased and always doubted that his daughter (my step daughter) was his. He gave me his hair brush, which I sealed in a bag, should I ever want to have a paternity test done. Question: Can I take his hair, along with a sweat sample or even a tossed cigarette butt from the step daughter, and have a DNA test done on them to confirm paternity? Or does it have to be blood or urine? I can’t let her know that I’m doing this for obvious reasons.
Admin says
Hi, Mindy. The normal samples used for doing a paternity test are buccal (cheek) cells, which are collected using special swabs like the ones in our home kit. Special samples such as the ones you described require special approval from the lab director and are only accepted under certain circumstances. DNA extraction is much more expensive for this type of testing and can run in the hundreds of dollars for you. For simplicity’s sake, I suggest you contact us directly and speak with one of our experts. They’ll be able to answer your questions more thoroughly and help you figure out what your best options are. Our number is 888-404-4363.
Karen says
I found out that I have a sister that was out up for adoption and she found me. She looks so much like me it unbelievable. We want to find out if we have the same father. There is no mother or father to use and my sibling from the same father has passed away. Is is possible to use our DNA to see if we have the same father?
Admin says
Hi, Karen. Without a mother or father, it becomes very difficult (if not impossible) to get conclusive results. If there are other close relations available on both the mother’s and father’s sides, it would be well worth your while to reach out to them to see if they’re willing to participate. To discuss your situation with a relationship-testing expert, I suggest giving us a call directly at 888-404-4363.
Sara says
I was adopted & found both of my biological parent/family a just over 20 years ago. My biological father passed away about 2 months ago. I have 4 half siblings on his side of the family, but only continue a relationship with one of them. Over all of these years I was never allowed to have a relationship with him. His wife insists that he was not my B. father though I know that he was! This has become very personal to both my eldest half sister & myself. We would like to have a DNA test run so as to finally put this matter to bed. I no longer carry on a active relationship with my B. mother, but she -may- be willing to participate in the testing. My B. sister’s mother has already agreed to do test. Will this be enough to prove that I am, in fact, his daughter? PS: Let’s say that my B.M. refuses to test just to narrow the ‘playing field’.
Admin says
Hi, Sara! Well, this is a tough one. Ideally, your birth mother and your half-sister’s birth mother would test along with the two of you. That’s the scenario that would absolutely yield the most conclusive results. But it sounds like that’s impossible. Your birth mother’s sister’s DNA isn’t helpful, really. We could do a half-sibling vs. unrelated test with you and your half-sister. It would be best if your birth mom would be willing to participate. We can’t guarantee a conclusive result without the mothers, but it may still be worth a try. The cost is about $399. If you want to consult further with one of our experts or set up the test, give us a call at 888-404-4363.
Jeff says
Both possible fathers are deceased. My mother is still living but doesn’t know which one it is. One possible father has a brother and other one has a sister. Should I get DNA from both of them And my mother too? Will it cost $399?
Admin says
Hi, Jeff. It would be optimal to test with known children of both possible fathers, but the option you suggest can work too. It’s essential that your mother contribute a DNA sample too. The cost would be $399 x 2 or $798 because there are two separate questions you’re asking: Is Possible Father A related to me? And is Possible Father B related to me? I recommend you contact us directly and speak with one of our experts. They’ll be able to figure out exactly who should participate in order to maximize the possibility of getting conclusive results and can set up the tests too, should you decide to do them. Hope this helps! The number is 888-404-4363.

Please help me!!!!!
I have a sister but we not to sure if we are blood sistets. We are very close and no matter what the test says she is still my sister. But for year we believe her mother has lie to her about who her dad is… For years my dad as a child would pick her up so we can play and get her school clothes and shoes and I wouldn’t see her till the next year in 2003 we found each other through a mutual friend and we have been close ever since we have very much similarities we look alike we sound alike we act alike even our child’s birth where the same we have the same health issues as well as our children our children look alike. 3 years we felt like we were stripped from our child of having a sibling but there is a problem my dad and we believe this is her dad too passed away 2006 and we have two different mothers and my mom passed away too and her mom won’t take a test she is hiding something and we believe it is that she is my sister!! On our dad’s dying bed her told us both how much we look so much alike and how he love us so much and stay with each other because we are family. Well we definitely would like to know because everyone is lying and has secrets. Please put me and the curiousity to rest and know for all these year was we really sisters what test would I need to get done.
Admin says
Hi there! You can do a “half-sibling vs. unrelated” DNA test, but your chances of getting conclusive results are considerably smaller if your mothers are not able (or willing) to test. I suggest you contact us directly at 888-404-4363 to consult with one of our experts. They’ll be able to tell you what your best options are or if it would just be a waste of money for you to try.
Sydney says
What can I do if I do not know my biological father or any family on his side?
Admin says
Hi, Sydney! Keep researching until you find them. It’s not possible to test for paternity without a possible father or one of his close relations (parent, sibling, known child).
Renee says
My sister and I just found out we have the same father via a Sibling Test. We know who that father is, but we have to prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt. Our father was a famous musician who is now deceased. We have a brother who in the 1960s was proven to be his son. There was a child support order for him then and he is listed on his birth certificate. We are now being tested with that brother. My sister’s mother and my mother were also tested. Our brother’s mom is not able to be tested. When the results show we are all siblings, will that be enough to prove our common parent is our father? Also, will that be enough for court? Thank you
Admin says
Hi, Renee! From what you said, it sounds like you have a good chance of getting conclusive results. Not having the brother’s mom participate is worrisome…that could make a difference. But it just depends on how the genes fall! As for the results being court-admissible: Usually, courts require that all DNA collection and submission be witnessed by an authorized agent in order to accept results. Doing so safeguards against tampering or other fraud. You can learn more about legal testing here: http://dnatesting.com/court-admissible-paternity-tests-legal-paternity-tests/
Sharon Young says
Due to physical & medical differences (and comments-stories), I believe my mother is only a half blooded sibling to her 7 siblings. However, she is no longer alive and all questionable parents are not alive. Only 2 of her siblings are living. One brother and one sister. My mother had 8 children (4 of each sex). The one brother still living only had 1 child-daughter. The one sister was not able to have children.
Is there any combination of DNA testing that might give us a reasonable confirmation (either way) of the siblings full/half relationship? I have both male and female cousins from my mothers maternal side. Besides a guess, we don’t have any confirmation of who her father may have been.
Admin says
Hi, Sharon. The fewer close family members that are tested, the greater the likelihood of getting inconclusive results, unfortunately. The best possible combination, from what you’ve said, would be to test you with your brother and sister. The test would be a half-sibling vs. full sibling one. Because of the extensive analysis involved, this type of testing starts at $399. I highly recommend that you call us directly to consult with one of our relationship experts: 888-404-4363.
Sharon says
Sorry, I don’t think I’ve made the situation clear. The issue is with my mother and her siblings. We think she might have a different father than the other 7. So all we have to test is her only living brother and sister. Brother’s daughter, and endless sons & daughters of her other deceased siblings.
Admin says
Oh, I’m sorry, Sharon. You’re right…I didn’t understand correctly. To have a chance of getting conclusive results and reconstructing the family’s genome, we would need at least your DNA, your siblings’, and your aunt’s and uncle’s. With your mother being deceased, it makes family reconstruction harder, but it may be possible. I recommend you contact us directly and consult with one of our relationship-testing experts at 888-404-4363. Good luck!
Hard ONe says
Hi there…!
If police finds a dead body of a person whose identity cannot be find out by any means but DNA testing so is it possible that the DNA sample of that deceased person matches with the DNA reference sample of some other person, (whose DNA profile is already in police database because the one is a cop), claiming the one as his son…?
Admin says
Hi! We are not a crime lab; we do paternity testing. That being said, familial DNA is being used more and more by law enforcement to help in human identification. Being able to find familial matches depends entirely on whose DNA is in available databases.
Hard ONe says
Thanks a ton for yours time and help… Regards…

You’re welcome! All the best to you.
NiKKi says
If my son is incarcerated and want to have a dna test done, can i, his mother, swab my mouth and test the child?
How accurate would the results be if i the grandmother, the child, and the childs mother tested together?
Admin says
Hi, Nikki. The chances of getting conclusive results are very good, however the lab fee is considerably higher due to the need for more extensive analysis. The cost is $399 to test the child, mother, and you. If the paternal grandfather can also participate, the lab fee drops to $350. Even with both grandparents participating, it is absolutely essential that the mother contribute her DNA to the test also. If you have more questions or want to order the test, please call us directly at 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 am to 6 pm Eastern Time).
Denise says
Hello, my daughters biological father passed away a couple of weeks ago . He was cremated and i was wondering if i could still get paternity test performed, He’s mother is still living. Also he had a blood disorder that require blood to be drawing for him for the last 21/2 years. every two weeks. The hospital is located in the state Maryland. Would they still have his blood samples on record ?
Admin says
Hi, Denise. I’m sorry about the passing of your daughter’s biological father. You’d have to contact the hospital directly to see if they still have his blood samples. It would be best to test his blood sample with your daughter’s DNA, obtained by swabbing the inside of her cheeks. If that’s not possible, then you can test his mother, you, and your daughter using cheek-swab samples. The chances of getting conclusive results this way are also very good. Hope this helps!
Deb says
My husband found out that the elderly neighbor that we took care of was his biological father. The neighbor divulged this prior to his death. He left his estate to my husband in a will, but the courts refuse to abide by the will and we have to contact “his father’s’ living relatives and advise them of the estate. “His father” never married, or had any other children that we know of. He does have several nephews. All other family is deceased. We still have his toothbrush and linen that he slept on when he died. I haven’t touched anything in the house since his death. It has been 3 years. Can a DNA test be done on any of these items to determine if there is a biological connection?
Admin says
Hi, Deb. Because of the circumstances you describe, it may be possible to test these items, but that would require specific approval from our lab director and extracting DNA from these types of items is very expensive. Also, you may want to contact an estate lawyer first. It may be that because there’s no impartial way to prove that the toothbrush and sheets belonged to your neighbor (and possibly contaminated by someone else), the court still may not accept results. Good luck!
Deb says
Could you tell me what it would cost if we decided to do it.
Admin says
Hi, Deb! There’s an $89 lab fee to test one child + one possible father + the mother (her participation is optional, but recommended). Plus the DNA collection kit is about $24.99 (it varies depending on where you buy it). You can learn more on our website: http://dnatesting.com/ Hope this helps!
Deb says
Thanks for that info, but I’m talking about the scenario I had mentioned above. My husband’s “father” who is deceased and using his toothbrush or sheets from his death bed.
Admin says
A lab could most likely extract DNA from that toothbrush and get a profile. Whether that information can be admissible in a court of law or not for survivor benefits is a question that an estate attorney could answer.
Brahim Soltani says
We have an issue in the family. There is one of the uncles is suspected as a real father ! Does the DNA test can conclude between actual father and real father if they are brothers.
It quite complicated if the uncle DNA is very similar to the father so is there any differences between them to proof which one is the real father ?
Identigene says
Hi, Brahim. If there is another possible father who is closely related to the man being tested, it is absolutely essential that the lab be told that ahead of time. That way, they can do more extensive analysis or test more markers, should that be necessary in order to get conclusive results. Ideally, both men would submit their DNA to be tested with the child’s.
LaToya Dorsey says
I’m trying to get a paternity test to prove that a deceased man is the father of my 12 year old son. The potential father’s dad is deceased as well and he only has half siblings who are living. Is it still possible to get a DNA test done?
Identigene says
Hi, LaToya. I have to say it would be difficult to establish paternity with half siblings and conclusive results would not be guaranteed. I suggest you contact us directly to consult with one of our relationship-testing experts and see what your options are at 888-404-4363.
Maria says
I wanted to ask if you can do a DNA test through the fathers half sisters …sisters from his dads side????.
Identigene says
Hi, Maria. We can do family relationship testing when the possible father isn’t available for testing, including testing the child with paternal aunts and uncles. To optimize the chances of conclusive results, you would also need to contribute your DNA for testing. Please call us directly for assistance and pricing at 888-404-4363 (M-F, 9 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern Time).
C. Mazzella says
My wifes’ brother was killed in a traffic accident 30 years ago. We have been confronted by a 31 year old man who says his mother has stated my wifes’ brother was his father. We don’t want to confront the grandfather because of age 78 until we know for sure. Is there a DNA test that can determine parentage by comparing my wife and the young man. That should be an aunt and nephew relationship?
Identigene says
Hi, C. I’m so sorry about your brother-in-law. Is the young man’s mother available to test along with him and your wife? Because that greatly enhances the chances of getting conclusive results.
Brandye says
My husband passed away and he was never sure if he’s son was really he’s. My husband only has half brother’s and sister’s and he’s mother and father have passed also. Is there away I can find out for sure this child is he’s or not? If he is I would like to give him some things but if I not I would like for this man to find he’s real father.
Identigene says
Hi, Brandye. My condolences on the loss of your husband. Is the alleged son’s mother still living? Including her DNA in any testing would be hugely beneficial. It may be possible to test with your husband’s half-brothers and sisters, depending on what other close relations also might be available to test. I suggest you contact one of our relationship experts directly at 888-404-4363 and see what your best options are, if any. I wish you all the best!
Colleen says
My son passed away a month ago. A girl he was dating says that she is 8.5 weeks pregnant with his child. How soon can we do a paternity test?
Identigene says
Hi, Colleen. My sincere condolences over the loss of your son. Our parent company, DDC, does pre-natal paternity testing. You can learn more about it here: https://dnacenter.com/dna-paternity-test/non-invasive-prenatal-paternity-test/ or give the lab a call at 800-681-7162.
Stephanie Stewart says
Can two women with different mothers be tested without father or mothers to determine if they are siblings?
Identigene says
Hi, Stephanie. We can do a “half-sibling vs. unrelated” test, but keep in mind that without DNA samples from other closely-related participants (like your mothers), there are no guarantees of getting conclusive results. When fathers aren’t available to contribute DNA, the more close relatives who are willing to participate, the better. For more info, please contact us at 888-404-4363.
Kat says
My parents are both deceased, is there a way to tell if my father was my biological father? I look so different from my other siblings. I believe my mother had an affair around the time I was born.
Identigene says
Hi, Kat. It’s important to keep in mind that physical traits alone are never a determinant of paternity, so you may want to resist the temptation to make assumptions about your own parentage. How we look depends on the gene recipe we happened to inherit and is entirely a matter of chance. It may just be that your siblings inherited similar recipes and you inherited your own unique one. My sister, for example, looks entirely different from my brother and me, but we all share the same dad.
That being said, if you want to make absolutely sure, we offer a variety of relationship tests to help put together the paternity puzzle. I highly recommend you contact us directly at 888-404-4363 and speak with one of our relationship-testing experts to see what your options are. Good luck!
Matt says
My ex claims I am her son’s father but I don’t believe or trust her. I was in an accident that left me with my jaw wired shut, a buccal swab is hard and painful to get at this time, is there an additional charge for using semen instead with identigene? I don’t want to wait until I am able to swab mouth because I dont want to miss anything if he is mine, but i dont want to be attached if he isnt
Identigene says
Hi, Matt. In that case, blood is preferable. Give us a call at 888-404-4363 during business hours and a representative can help get you set up.
kamryn P says
If i am doing a paternity test with myself and my potential father, can this be done with out my mothers DNA? she is deceased and there is no way of swabbing her. Will the results be affected or changed by this?
Identigene says
Hi, Kamryn. In the overwhelming number of cases, the mother’s DNA is not required in order to get conclusive results. But we recommend she contribute her DNA just in case, if possible. You should be just fine!
Raven says
Hi. The man who may be my father is deceased, but he has other children. I moved out of state. From my understanding you can test one of his children and their mother along with myself and my mother. Would I have to purchase multiple kits to send to them? My mother is also out of state. What would be the price?
Identigene says
Hi, Raven. Give us a direct call and we can arrange sending testing materials to all parties for you. The price for this type of test starts at $329, and our number is 888-404-4363.
lesliesilva says
how can i find my family members
Identigene says
Hi! I’m not quite sure I understand your question. Are you talking about using DNA databases to find family members through DNA?
Kayla says
Hey, is it possible to test a possible niece or nephew to find out if their grandpa might be my father?
Identigene says
Hi, Kayla! Yes, it is. But we would most likely need other participants as well, including you. To consult with a relationship-testing expert to determine what your options are, please contact us directly at 888-404-4363 during business hours.
Matisha says
My sister and I share a mother, but possibly not a father. Both are deceased, along with all grandparents. Will this test (sibling test) let me know if, in fact, I am not the 2nd child of “my father”? He denied me my whole life. Thanks.
Identigene says
Hi, Matisha. We do full vs. half sibling tests, but without any of the participants you mentioned, it’s not guaranteed to provide a conclusive result. It really all depends on how much DNA in common you and your sister inherited. I suggest you contact us directly at 888-404-4363 and one of our relationship experts can explain what your options are. Good luck!

Sad when your whole family dislikes and/or disowns you… But just outright pathetic for your whole family to be willing to fight against you in court over your “possible” biological child… Kenny is not a good person at all, nor was her ever… We were good friends… (or so I thought) [He stole from me and many other things that I was unaware of] Friends since 7th grade until Jan 2016 when he left Mia and I picked her up bc he physically abused her and never did right by her…
But she unfortunately made the dumb decision to go back to him, then came to me after being split for 3 months, and then in Dec, found out she preg… conception date the dr gave us is an estimate, and too close for comfort to the time she split with him to come back to me…
Can I determine if this baby is mine with these people willing to send samples?
Being that my name WILL be put on the birth certificate, I will be able to consent for the baby boy. (I’m praying he’s my son, but his mother, my gf, that I love to death isn’t trustworthy and it’s very skeptical that she refuses to take a test to prove it’s mine bc she broke trust around the conception date estimate.)
If he is no match to me, can you determine if the baby is Kenny’s Son by just the baby and Bridgett’s sample?
If he is not my child, and my name is on the birth certificate, depending on my feelings/emotions when results come in about the test| what, if any, legal options do I have, in any category..? ex.(Custody, Get Off Certificate, Compensation, Sue, idk just want to know all my options)–If I am ok with it–and his father is trying to go to court… what can he do and what leverage will I have against him, being that I’m on the certificate, and bc I can prove I’ve been helping through pregnancy and he walked out the picture when she found out she was pregnant, and/or/would it help in court to say/show/prove, I’ve become attached to this baby and I am willing, devoted, and motivated to provide and care for that baby boy as if he were my blood son – (slide in facts of his unfitness to be a father as my devotion, sympathy, motivation, willingness to provide and care for him, bc my real dad walked out when I was born and died of drugs… which is the road Kenny is going down),
And his mother and Kenny’s own mother, Bridgett is 100% against Kenny being the father whether it was his sperm or not bc she knows and would under oath tell the truth, which is and how I/we can testify/prove I’m more fit to be his guardian/father than Kenny… (he’s on meth, coke, bunch of different pills, weed, alcoholic, stays in strip club, stolen assault rifle, criminal record, and no job.)
Identigene says
Hi, Landon. Thanks for giving so many details! It’s probably wise in this situation to worry about you and only you, and not worry about Kenny. You should absolutely insist on having a legal paternity test performed before you sign the birth certificate. There are no guarantees that a judge will “let you off the hook” for child support if you sign the birth certificate, even if a subsequent DNA test proves you’re not the father. All we need for testing is your’s and the baby’s DNA. If your ex-girlfriend is not willing to permit the baby to test, she may be compelled to by the courts. Good luck!
Landon says
Thanks for the advice!!
I would love to get the test done before signing, but if I insist too much, Mia gets aggravated and/or pissed at me… even if I say, “I’m not accusing you or anything, but, you getting so defensive, angry and adamant about not taking one seems very suspicious and incriminating on your part.” Also if I say, “It’s just so kenny can’t try to start drama and/or bring this to court and make a big mess and financial problem for us.”
And I don’t want to make it cause a breakup between us… even tho it’s not an unreasonable request on my part… I just want to do this the easiest and Best way possible…./:
I couldn’t take my name off the birth certificate if I found that he is not my child, either, (secretly without mia knowing…. ) (bring issue to court and not get hit with child support)
Or,
Can hospital do test asap (take sample right when baby is born and mine, and get results quickly, or before we have to sign certificate?? Or is it possible for the baby’s Last name to be put as mine, and me not sign until i get proof that he is mine.? Or if his name is put as Mia’s last name and I do not sign, could I sign once I get proof AND the baby’s last name be changed to my last name (without dropping middle name and putting her last name as his middle name and my last as the baby’s last…) and if either/any of these alterations to birth certificate or the baby’s name changed to Mine and add my name to it,… would they print a NEW and LEGIT/LEGAL certificate, or just make a second one and/or have the original on file and as the legal one to turn to or look at when doing things involving the child.?.
Identigene says
I still highly recommend not signing anything until you have a paternity test done. As for the how, what, when, and where, you should definitely contact a family-law attorney in your area to see what your best options are.
Landon says
And I’m just making sure we are clear… you said “legal paternity test”, is that something only hospital does (bc of witnesses and gov/legal officials) or is your test, legal in terms of, legitimacy in court..?
Identigene says
Hi, Landon. If participants collect their DNA at home and send it in, that’s considered a peace-of-mind test. Results are not court-admissible because the identity of the participants cannot be verified. However, you can use our kit for a legal, court-admissible test. Once you purchase the kit, just give us a call at 888-404-4363 and we can set up a legal, witnessed test in your area.
Phylicia says
My father passed and right after, there was talk throughout the family about him having an older child. It’s a lot of “he say, she say ” at this point, but I want to know for sure and have reached out to my potential sibling. I would like to have some type of testing done as well. Right now, it is just me and my younger sister and we both have the same mom and dad. What type of test are recommended to test if I am related to my potential older sibling.
Identigene says
Hi, Phylicia. We can perform a test to determine if you and your sister share a half-sibling or no relationship with this potential older child. Ideally, your mother would test too, as would the potential older sibling’s mother. Please call us at 888-404-4363 to discuss your options with one of our relationship-testing experts.
cornelia says
It’s possible that I may have a half sibling in Holland. My father could be that person’s father. My dad is dead and I am wondering how accurate a result could be. We are both now pensioner age but would like to know if I in England am related to this possible sibling born during the war years. Is it possible to prove it with good accuracy? What percentage accuracy would be likely?
Identigene says
Hi, Cornelia. Because every case is different, I cannot give you precise percentages of relationship. Our parent company has a division in the UK. I suggest you contact them, since they are closer geographically. They do a full range of relationship DNA tests, including what you would need: half-siblingship. Best of luck! Here’s the site: http://dnacentre.co.uk/
Audrey says
I am 40 years old, I do not know who my father is. My mother does not know who my father is nor does she remember. She was very young and not responsible. If I sent in my DNA, is there a way to find a possible paternity match anywhere?
you talk a lot about swabbing grandparents but there are all solutions for people who think they know…then they will be eliminated as a match, but what can be done if you don’t know at all? Anything?
Identigene says
Hi, Audrey. For privacy reasons, we do not maintain DNA databases nor do we sell our customers’ profiles to third parties. You will need to contact companies like 23AndMe or Ancestry to see if they can help you. Good luck! If you ever locate someone you think may be your biological father, then we’ll be more than happy to run that test for you.
Bre says
Hi, I need help. I have a person stating that they are a potential cousin or sister. My uncle has passed away and my father would not do this test….he and I are estranged. Is there a test that the two of us can take to prove that we are related?
Thank you,
Bre
Identigene says
Hi, Bre. Yes, we do other relationship testing. Please call us directly at 800-344-9583, and one of our specialists can assess your situation and discuss your options with you.
Teacy says
Hi. Can the mother and unborn baby’s DNA be confirmed in 1 country. The alleged father’s DNA confirmed in another.. And the 2 seperate results be sent to a lab to analize and confirm paternity?
Tracy says
Hi. Can the mother and unborn baby’s DNA be confirmed in 1 country. The alleged father’s DNA confirmed in another.. And the 2 seperate results be sent to a lab to analize and confirm paternity?
Identigene says
Hi, Tracy. Yes, absolutely. Identigene’s parent company, DDC, performs Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity (NIPP) tests. Just give them a call at 800-681-7162 (1-513-881-7800 for international customers) and they can give you the details.
Sandy says
Hi, My son is currently in prison and the girl he has been dating is telling him he is the father of her newborn baby! He has a twin brother but they are not identical. Is there anyway we can test his twin brother or his sister for that matter instead of him? If so how accurate would the teat be?
Identigene says
Hi, Sandy. Yes, we can test the brother. But actually…testing YOU is better and testing you as well as your son’s father is best. To get the most conclusive results, it’s important for the mother of the child to be tested too. Is that possible? The more people who participate, the more accurate the results. I suggest you contact us directly and one of our specialists can help you choose the best option and give you info on pricing. Call 800-344-9583.
Michelle says
Can the DNA test be done without the father ( like his mom or dad ) ?
Identigene says
Hi, Michelle. In order to obtain proof of any biological relative, we need as many close relatives to participate as possible. For example, if neither parent is available for testing, some combination of grandparents, parents’ brothers and sisters, other known children of one or both parents, etc. would be most essential in order to obtain conclusive results. We do this kind of relationship testing all the time and you’re welcome to contact us directly at 800-344-9583 to discuss options with one of our specialists.
Chantelle says
I found out a few years ago my dad wasn’t my real dad, so I went and found my dad but a few months later he suddenly passed! Now he has to sons and there mum has put it into there head that he’s not my real dad, so my half brothers want a DNA! So same dad but diff mums obviously, who’s DNA would I need to get the best test possible for this sibling DNA! Thanks
Identigene says
Hi, Chantelle. Ideally, all siblings’ mothers would also participate. This would increase the chances of getting conclusive results, no matter who else is participating. But a test could be done with just you and one of the half-siblings. The test would be for half-sibling vs. unrelated. Call our parent company, DDC, if you’re interested in learning more: 800-681-7162.
Latrice says
Hi,
Which test would I take to determine if someone is my aunt? My father only had a name for his father and never searched for him. I recently did some research and found that he (my potential grandfather) has two daughters who are willing to take a DNA test to see if we are related. The problem is that both of my grandparents are deceased and I would like to do the DNA test on my own to confirm before presenting my father with information. Is there a way to determine if these women are in fact my paternal aunts?
Identigene says
Hi, Latrice. Yes, you can, but there is no guarantee of getting conclusive results. Ideally, your dad would test too because, the more DNA, the better for tests like this. It’s like putting together a relationship jigsaw puzzle…the more pieces of the puzzle you have, the clearer the picture gets. For more info on your options, feel free to give our parent company DDC a call at 800-681-7162.
Shaherah says
My 14 year old son was killed in Jan he had gotten his girlfriend pregnant. She’s due any day now the heath department stated that we have to do a DNA in order for the child to have his last name. So I brought a DNA kit so can I swab the baby and my other son (which is full blood uncle) and get the results. This is all new to me I’m confused a little.
Identigene says
Hi, Shaherah. First of all, my sincere condolences on the death of your son. I highly recommend that you give us a call. A grandparentage test would actually be better in your case, and the mother should contribute her DNA as well. In order to be legally considered the child of your son, the DNA test needs to be a legal one, and we’ll be happy to explain it all to you. The number for our parent company, DDC, is 800-681-7162.
Alexis says
Hi my sons father passed away so he isn’t available to do a paternity test. He does have a willing mother and a biological sister but the potential fathers father is incarserated so HeS not available either but the potential grandparent is available as well. What test will i need and whats the pricing.
Identigene says
Hi, Alexis. Pricing for this type of test starts at $299, due to the more extensive analysis required for results. Please call our parent company, DDC, at 800-681-7162, and they can help you determine testing options and give exact pricing.
Staesha mamae says
So im trying to figure out if my dad is my real biological dad, & my (half brother) is deffinently my (dads) son, if i got tested with my (brother) could i find out? I would think so, & were would i get it done?
Identigene says
Hi! Our parent company, DDC, does this type of testing all the time. Be advised that it’s best if your mother is willing to test too. IF you are in the United States, call 800-681-7162. If you are not in the U.S., please call 1-513-881-7800.
Engr. Shariful Islam says
I want to know whether is it possible to know the identity of father of the kid before delivery?
Identigene says
Hi! Yes, indeed. Our parent company, DDC, does an excellent Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test, which provides guaranteed-accurate results and is completely safe for mother and fetus. You can learn more about here: https://dnacenter.com/dna-paternity-test/non-invasive-prenatal-paternity-test/
Engr. Shariful Islam says
ok
Bob says
Do I need to buy two test kits to test twins. And what’s the price.
Identigene says
Hi, Bob. You can use just the one kit to test the twins and yourself. But keep in mind that you’ll need to pay two separate lab fees. The lab fee, then, is $119 x 2 or $238. Please indicate on the paperwork that you are testing two children with one kit or you can call us at 800-344-9583 and we can set up the test correctly and take payment over the phone.
Kris says
I was wondering if you could test a tooth brush or something with their DNA on it? The possible father committed suicide and I don’t have anything else. I would like for his family not to know with all that is going on. Just as a final thing for him I would love to find out if my little girl is truly his. Please and thank you.
Identigene says
Hi, Kris. I’m so sorry about your loss. You may want to ask the funeral home that handled his arrangements if they collected blood cards for him. That would be a more reliable way to extract DNA. We may possibly be able to extract enough DNA for testing from the toothbrush, but there’s a $150 non-refundable fee for sample-viability testing. If there’s not enough DNA for paternity testing, then you’re out that money. If you’d like to talk directly with an expert here about your options, please call us at 800-681-7162.
Ashlee says
I have been trying to find ways to search for my bio father. I have very little information about him all I know is the circumstance around my conception and what city it was in. I wanted to try to get my DNA ran through the police database but unsure if it’s possible. I have done a test on Ancestry and I have two possible second cousins from my father’s side on there but even they are unsure of how to get me in the right direction.
Identigene says
Hi, Ashlee. Law-enforcement does not make any DNA databases available for personal use. You may want to consider hiring a professional investigator. Good luck!
Tracey says
Born to an Unwed Mother in 1962. Father’s name on Birth Certificate is Blank. He is now deceased. If I can get his full brother, acknowledged Legitimate daughter and my mother to do the test, would it be conclusive enough to prove paternity for correcting my Birth Certificate and also being able to obtain a Passport? Two things previously out of the question for me. My Uncle and Half Sister are willing. My Uncle’s son and niece come up in Ancestry as 2nd and 4th cousin matches to me so I don’t expect any surprises.
Identigene says
Hi, Tracey. Yes, the three people you mentioned initially are he best people to test. In order to do anything of a legal nature with the results, you need to do what’s called a “legal test” or “chain-of-custody test” with court-admissible results. Identigene’s parent company, DDC, can make all the arrangements for you and your relatives, wherever you all live. Just give us a call at 800-681-7162 (M-F, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm Eastern Time).
Angela says
What is the best way to determine paternity if the father is not available and the potential sibling would only be a half sibling?
I recently found a familial connection, and she does not know who her biological father is. We share half as much dna with me as I do with my own half brother…so we know that she is not exactly a distant relative. My grandfather, her potential bio dad, is deceased. Would testing a potential half-brother or half-sister, along with her bio mom, give us an answer?
Identigene says
Hi, Angela. Yes, it would. The chances of getting the most conclusive results are increased if your mother is also willing to test. Just call Identigene’s parent company, DDC, to get started: 800-681-7162 (M-F, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm Eastern Time).
Pernell says
What is your lab fee today for a simple paternity test for father and potential son?
Identigene says
Hi, Pernell. It’s $119, with a 1-business-day turnaround time, once samples are received at the lab.
Corey says
I sent in swabs for me and a child that maybe mines but the female was sleeping with 4 other men that night. She gave the child my last name, a friend told me that he sent in swabs for a child the test said it was his but when he did another test at another lab, he was not. I am basically in the same situation but my question is how many times are the swabs tested before the results are posted?
Identigene says
Hi, Corey. I can’t speak for other labs, but here at Identigene/DDC, each test is run twice. If tests take place separately at two different accredited and trusted labs, and two different results are issued, the only explanation is that a different person’s DNA was submitted for each test. That kind of fraud can take place if the tests aren’t witnessed. Hope this helps!
Rocky says
37 years ago I had sex with a 2nd cousin, at the time we had no idea we were cousins. I think her daughter is mine and want to know that if I do a DNA test without the mother being tested will test results be accurate even though we have the same family blood? The young lady has agreed to this test and I would love to know if she is my daughter or not.
Identigene says
Hi, Rocky. As second cousins, you and your cousin only share 3.125% of the same DNA, which is negligible, so it shouldn’t be a factor. In most tests, the mother’s participation is not required in order to get conclusive results, but we nevertheless recommend that she participate, just in case. Hope this helps!
Nikki says
Hi, In my case the Mother in unavailable to take a DNA test. If I have the Child’s DNA, Father’s DNA and Paternal Grandmother’s DNA samples, Will the results still be conclusive?
Identigene says
Hi, Nikki. In most cases, the mother’s DNA is not necessary in order to obtain conclusive results. Nevertheless, we advise that she contribute it if possible, just in case. That being said, if the child is a minor and the alleged father doesn’t have legal authority over the child, the mother’s permission is necessary.
kayla says
Hi I Need a answer Okay father deceased his mom sister and brother is deceased there is one child of his that is questioned on if it is his child or not he has 4 daughters how can results be given and what makes this so difficult is only two daughters have the same mom the other two have there moms and one of them mother is deceased what can be done!
Identigene says
Hi, Kayla. It’s not absolutely impossible. What would be best is if the child in question’s mother would participate, along with the child. Also, if one of the sisters has a mother who’s still living, it would be ideal if the mother would test too. Otherwise, it would be extremely difficult to get conclusive results. I suggest you contact our experts directly to see what your best options might be. It’s easier to talk it through with a phone call. 800-681-7162, and the hours are M-F, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm Eastern.
tiffany says
i have a question, me and my half brother have just found out that we may have another half sister, we would all share our father, is it possible for all 3 of us to take a test to see if she shares our dad, he passed away in 2001.
Identigene says
Hi, Tiffany. Inasmuch as you are all half siblings, it may be difficult to get conclusive results without the participation of your mothers. I suggest you contact our parent company, DDC, directly to consult with one of our experts about what your best options may be: 800-681-7162 (M-F, 8 am to 5 pm Eastern).
Velkis says
How do you find out if your sister is your daughter? Do you need the mothers DNA?
Identigene says
Hi, Velkis. In this type of case it’s best to have the mother’s DNA, but it’s not always necessary. What IS necessary is letting the lab know ahead of time of the types of possible biological relationships you and the other person share. Also, you didn’t mention if the child is a minor. If so, testing requires a legal parent’s permission.
Unknown says
Hi there. I have 4 sisters and i know 2 of my little sisters and i have different fathers but my eldest sister and i was told by my mom that we have the same father and i dont believe that. one of my cousin mentioned to my eldest sister that i might not have the same father as my eldest sister and i asked my mother she said that shes hundred percent sure that me and my eldest have the same father but i have doubt. my supposed father is lebanese and since i was born my mother and him werent together since this day and im now 28yrs old seen my lebanese dad once but i know nothing about him. my dad that i think is my dad is dead from a car accident and he is greek. I asked my eldest what is her blood type she said 0+ and my mother blood type is 0+ and i havent done my test to find out my blood type. I dont know the blood type of my lebanese dad my supposed dad since they arent together i have never heard of him so i cant find my dad and make him do the test to find what is his blood type and if he is really my dad. my dad that i think is my dad the greek i dont know his blood type since he died when i was in primary school and all i know that he was greek i have no contact to none of his family. my question is : how can i find out who is my real dad? the lebanese dad or the greek dad? please help.
Identigene says
Hi! Doing a DNA test with your eldest sister, your mother, and you could help determine if you and your sister have the same father or not. As to determining which of the men is your father, that might not be possible since you don’t have any information about them. Good luck!
Tray says
Is a half sibling test accurate with not having parents to test . We took one and thinks it’s inaccurate.
Identigene says
Hi, Tray. It makes it much more difficult to get conclusive results, yes.
hypoeddy says
I have an unusual question. My father passed away in 2008, paternity needs to be determined between my father or myself. My mother is still alive. I’m not sure, but I might be able to find an old pair of sunglasses with his DNA around the nosepiece but I may not be able to locate the sunglasses.
Identigene says
Hi! Unfortunately, there would not be enough DNA on that nose-piece for paternity testing. Does he not have any other living relatives, like another child or a sister or brother? That would be your best bet.
Barbara says
My sons father is deceased marine who refused to acknowledge our son. His family will not submit to testing. I have his name, SS#, other info for his mother/his dad deceased.
He has one 1/2 sibling. How can I prove his parentage?
Identigene says
Hi, Barbara. I’m assuming the half-sibling shares a mother with the deceased man and not a father? Rather than trying to hash out all the possibilities here, I suggest you contact the experts at our parent company, DDC, directly. They’ll be able to help determine your options and whether or not a test could be conclusive: 800-681-7162.
AMY says
I have a question my son’s father is denying him and he won’t do a DNA can his sister do a DNA to see if it is his son
Identigene says
Hi, Amy. If you’re absolutely sure the man is the father of your daughter, you can test your son, your daughter, and you to determine if both children have the same father. This is called a sibling vs. half-sibling test. It’s very important that you submit your DNA also. Our parent company, DDC, performs thousands of these tests every year. Give us a call at 800-681-7162 and we’ll be happy to answer your questions and arrange for a test, should you decide to do one.
Jessica says
Is there a way of finding out the father of my child without presenting his DNA or any of his relatives? I think I know who the father is, but i don’t want to tell him he’s the father and he ends up not being the father.
Identigene says
Hi, Jessica. The only way to get absolute proof of paternity is through DNA testing, and if he’s not willing to test himself, then one of his close biological relatives needs to test with both you and the child. You can’t do it without closely-related DNA from his side of the family.
Nombuso says
Hi there, my brother passed away last year and He had a twin (sister) but they are not identical. Yesterday we were told by his girlfriend (whom we never met) that she gave birth to his son. Now how can we find out for certain that the child belongs to my late brother? Please help!
Identigene says
Hi, Nombuso. A DNA relationship should be done with the child and you. Since the child is a boy, you can do what’s called a Y-STR test, which analyzes the Y chromosome. The Y chromosome is passed on from father to son only, so if your brother was the father, then the child would have the same Y chromosome as you.
Lucinda says
I’m wondering, I’ve seen it posted that the 1 kit is for mother, father and child.
But we don’t have the father around. So can we use the one kit for mother and 2 children??
Identigene says
Hi, Lucinda. If you want to find out whether or not a man is the father of one or both of your children, you must have one of his close biological relatives participate: sibling, other child, parent, etc. Testing only you and the children will not give you any paternity answers. If you have further questions, please call us directly at 800-344-9583.
Deborah says
I just wanted to ask if I had a dna test done if I saw what my mom`s countries if I could eliminate them and assume the rest would be my dad`s. I think it would give me a clue to who he is.
Identigene says
Hi, Deborah. It might or it might not. Ancestry tests can give varying results, depending on the algorithm used by the individual company, and so they may not help you in this instance.
Lisa says
if your mother doesn’t know who your father is-How do i find out-who he is?
Identigene says
Hi, Lisa. There are ancestry companies out there who may be able to help you get started if your DNA has matches in their databases. If not, then it’s up to your mother to give you as much information as she can.
Sherry says
Hello, I recently found out that my father possibly had a son before my parents were married. My mother is deceased and my possible brother’s mother is deceased. If my father isn’t available for testing can I and my possible 1/2 brother have DNA testing done to determine if he’s my half brother?
Identigene says
Hi, Sherry. Yes, you can, although keep in mind that without the mothers’ DNA, there’s a much higher chance of getting inconclusive results. You’re welcome to contact us to discuss your options further and/or set up a test: 800-681-7162.
Mary says
A man has contacted me saying he believes he is my deceased brothers son. Is there any DNA test that we can take that will tell us if we are related?
Identigene says
Hi, Mary. Yes, we can do an avuncular (aunt/uncle) DNA relationship test. Please call us at 800-681-7162 for a private consultation.
Sara says
Hi Im trying to see if my “nephew “ from my half brother is actually his biological child he doesnt want to take the test but the mother and me( half sister to the “father”) are willing is there any chance to have an accurate reading? Our mothers are sisters and had married then divorced our father which we share.
Identigene says
Hi, Sara. Seeing as your half-brother’s mother and your mothers are sisters who were married to the same man, it could be extremely difficult to get a conclusive answer; is the other mother also willing to test? That would help a lot. I suggest you contact our experts at 800-681-7162 to determine what your best options are.
Marjorie says
My sister who I thought was my full biological sister maynot be. I’ve recently been told that we hav different fathers. she is in her mid70s and I am In my early 60s our mother is not alive and neither the man who I thought was my father. Can my sister an I be tested to see if we have the same DNA? Would this prove that we are full sisters? And what is involved and the cost please
Identigene says
Hi, Marjorie. Yes, we do sibling DNA tests to confirm full- and half-sibling relationships. Samples for the test are collected simply and easily with cheek swabs. I suggest you contact our parent company DDC in the UK for pricing and to help answer your other questions. The number is 020 3301 7346
Christy says
Many times I have been told my Grandfather was not my Dads real Father. My Grandfather is dead now as well as my Dad. I have hair from my grandfather and from my dad because i want to know if he is really my grandfather. Can I use the hair I have to determine this?
HomeDNA Identigene says
Hi, Christy. My condolences on the loss of your grandfather and father. In order to use hair for paternity testing, it has to have the roots, which I’m sure you don’t have, unfortunately.
Tjf says
Hi,
My father is deceased. I am not sure who my biological grandfather is. He is currently not in the same country as me, but my suspected grandfather’s sister (my supposedly great aunt) is nearby. Would this be too far apart for dna testing to show whether her brother is my grandfather?
HomeDNA Identigene says
Hi, Tjf. You and your great-aunt would only share 12.5% of the same DNA, so that would be a stretch for STR relationship testing, even if your mother participated also to help strengthen results. Have you considered asking your grandfather himself to test with you? Something to consider.
Mark says
Hi , is it possible to test 2 children with the same possible father with 1 kit? or do i need to buy 2 seperate kits? thanks.
HomeDNA Identigene says
Hi, Mark. Great question! Each kit contains DNA-collection materials for three people: the child, one possible father, and the mother. Although the mother’s participation is not required, it is recommended in case it’s needed. That being said, you can use the materials designated for the mother to test another child instead. But keep in mind, because we’re now answering two questions of paternity instead of just one, you’ll need to pay two separate lab fees. Once you have your kit, it’s easiest if you call us and have one of our team members set up the test for you, since you’re using the kit differently than what it’s intended for: 800-329-7519 (M-F, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm Eastern).
Jamie says
My daughter’s biological father has been out of the picture since conception and currently have no clue where he is. I knew nothing about his family only that he was adopted and he had no information on his birth parents. I just found out through mutual friends who his biological father was. Sadly he passed away a few years ago. Would I be able to determine if that was truly her grandfather by testing the grandfather’s sister or brother and my daughter?
HomeDNA Identigene says
Hi, Jamie. Does the grandfather have other children who would be willing to test? The closer you can get genetically to the alleged father, the more likely you are to get conclusive results. You’d also want to include your DNA in any test you do.
Precious says
Hello, I am trying to find the best way to do a DNA test to find out if this young lady is my sister. My father passed away 8 months ago I am his only child besides the fact that there has always been a possibility and unfortunately he passed away before he got it done and I would like to find out if we are siblings so we can grow a bond. my fathers dad is not available but my grandma his mother is and my father also has brothers. so which would be best and most accurate without breaking the bank?
HomeDNA Identigene says
Hi, Precious. Is this young lady’s mother willing to test? Because that would make things much simpler, more affordable, and more accurate. You could do a half-sibling vs. unrelated test. You’re welcome to call our parent company DDC and talk to our experts about your best options and pricing: 800-681-7162.
Cj says
Hi my father passed away and his brother but I know his brothers child is it possible to go for blood test with him to confirm that my father was my biological or what
HomeDNA Identigene says
Hi, CJ. Confirming a cousin relationship through traditional DNA testing is not likely to yield any type of conclusive results.
Bill says
My 37-year old Godchild just did a “legal collection” paternity test with the man listed as the father on her birth certificate. She has never had previous contact with him. The test came back negative. This man then suggested another person as being her probable father. (Her mother will not cooperate with further names, but others believe that the man now being pointed to as a possible father is the correct person.) Unfortunately, the new suspect has been dead for 30 years. He does have a very elderly brother, who was the only other child by the same parents. Could DNA testing establish that a close family connection exists between my Godchild and this elderly man. If there were to be a close match here, a non-legal conclusion that the dead man was probably her father might be reached. Is this correct? Beyond that, exhuming the dead man’s body or locating a lock of his hair (possibly kept in rememberance) would be the only way to extract DNA for a match to prove paternity for my Godchild. Is this also correct?
HomeDNA Identigene says
Hi, Bill. Your godchild could definitely test with the possible father’s brother. Keep in mind that the chances of getting conclusive results are much better if the mother of the godchild also contributes her DNA. The godchild is welcome to contact our parent company, DNA Diagnostics Center (DDC) about this type of testing: 800-681-7162.

Going to try to explain this best I can.
My grandmother and grandpa have 5 Children. Recently just found out grandma was being unfaithful in the relationship so some of the children might not be fully related. Grandma and grandpa are both unwilling to participate in a dna test to see which children are full siblings. And only 1 sibling is willing to get dna tested but all of the grandchildren are willing to participate in order to find out the truth.
Is there any way we can test an uncle and a nephew to see if the grandpa is related to both of them?

Hi, Natalie. I’m assuming you want to test your brother with your son? Is that correct?

Hi, I’m really hoping that you can help me in this mess of a mess. My son (the assumed father) is incarcerated and is willing to do a DNA test, the mother of the child is out of prison but in a local county jail close by. The child in question is being raised by the maternal grandparents. The bio-mother has no legal rights to the child in question. But my son was told by the bio-mother of child in question, he was the father of this child. What kit do I need? How can it or will it be legal to have this with all names participating, if they have valid IDs or inmates numbers with their picture on it? How much is the kit? Do I need to contact the prison my son is at to see if they allow that? Who does the testing if they are incarcerated and how do they send it off? Does it cost extra, from different places they are located at the moment?
Signed~
In hopes you can help, so this Nana, can be the Nana to that precious baby💔
